A Glimpse of the job:
The Systems Administrator I performs routine systems administration support functions, including maintaining and supporting Linux systems in a multi-distribution environment.
Essential Duties and Tasks:
Linux System Administration
Installs, upgrades, configures, maintains, and supports Linux server hardware and software in a multi-distribution environment.
Assists with the design, implementation, testing, and deployment of Linux server systems.
Installs and configures physical and virtual systems per customer specifications.
Researches and troubleshoots technical issues with operating systems, supporting services, access requests, software packages, and hardware issues affecting workstations, servers, interactive systems, and computational clusters.
Conducts basic server performance analysis and tuning.
Customizes software configurations based on customer or unit requirements.
Creates and maintains scripts to automate routine systems administration tasks.
Develops, documents, and follows internal processes and procedures.
Customer Success
Builds customer trust by implementing solutions that address a wide variety of technology requirements.
Provides Tier I support and assists with Tier II support for Linux systems and related services.
Troubleshoots and resolves server hardware, software, configuration, and basic network issues.
Learns, supports, and assists customers with specialized software for domain-specific applications, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and general programming.
Assists with recommendations for server hardware and software solutions to meet customer needs.
Uses supported tools to provide development flexibility while maintaining regulatory compliance.
Ensures excellent customer service through timely communication, technical support, and effective problem resolution.
Security
Monitors and maintains Linux system security.
Implements IT security controls based on established processes to meet TAMU, TAMU System, state, and federal compliance requirements.
Assists with backup, protection, and recovery support for client data.
Leverages automation tools to configure and monitor compliance targets.
Other Duties
Participates in training and professional development as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Salary Range: $48,000 - $52,000

Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Two years of experience in systems administration, Linux administration, or a related information technology field.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience supporting Linux systems in a multi-distribution environment.
Experience using Bash scripting.
Experience with automation technologies such as Ansible or Chef.
Experience with Python or other scripting/programming languages.
Experience supporting technology solutions in a higher education or research computing environment.
Experience with Linux administration training or certifications, such as Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA), or equivalent Linux-focused training.
Demonstrated ability and willingness to learn new technologies, complete training, and adapt to evolving technical environments.
Experience supporting faculty, researchers, or other customers with specialized technology needs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
Excellent written communication, analytical, organizational, and troubleshooting skills.
Knowledge of GNU/Linux operating systems and effective use of the Linux command line.
Knowledge of server hardware, virtualization, and systems administration principles.
Knowledge of intermediate troubleshooting techniques, client relations, and ITIL concepts.
Ability to create and maintain automation scripts for systems administration.
Ability to document technical procedures and system configurations.
Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
Additional Information
Other Requirements and Factors:
Ability to maintain the security and integrity of critical infrastructure, which may include communications systems, computer networks and systems, cybersecurity systems, electrical grids, hazardous waste treatment systems, or water treatment systems.
This role may require working outside of standard office hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to support the demands of technology services and ensure the seamless operation of essential systems.
This position is security sensitive and must be a US citizen.
This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TAMU policies, regulations, rules, and procedures.
All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely and without injury to self or others, in compliance with System and University safety requirements.
This position allows alternate work location per TAMU guidelines.
