Software Engineer I
This is a 14 month fixed-term position providing parental leave cover. (potential to be extended to 18 months)
As a Software Engineer in the Technical Operations' Systems Engineering & Integration team, you will help build and integrate web applications, APIs and infrastructure services used by our internal customers, engineering teams and operational partners.
Our team works across frontend, backend and infrastructure systems. We develop new capabilities, connect existing platforms and create cohesive user experiences for complex infrastructure and operational workflows.
You do not need to be experienced across the entire technology stack. Your primary experience can be in one of the following areas:
- Frontend engineering
- Backend engineering
- DevOps, platform or infrastructure engineering
You will have opportunities to develop your skills in the other areas while contributing to services and applications from initial design through implementation, integration and production release.
Main duties
- Implement and deliver features and customer requirements from concept through production release
- Develop or integrate frontend applications, backend services, APIs or infrastructure components
- Work with engineers and stakeholders across infrastructure, networking, platform and product teams
- Improve the reliability, maintainability and operational readiness of our services
- Investigate and prioritize bugs, technical issues and integration problems
- Write unit and integration tests
- Communicate progress, estimates, risks and impediments clearly
- Contribute to technical documentation and share knowledge with the engineering team
- Collaborate with UX designers, software engineers, architects and platform teams
- Learn from experienced team members and contribute to technical discussions and engineering practices
Requirements
- A degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- Some professional, academic or personal experience developing software, web applications, services or infrastructure
- Experience in at least one of the following areas:
- TypeScript, JavaScript or frontend development
- Go or another backend programming language
- DevOps, cloud, platform or infrastructure engineering
- A basic understanding of software development practices
- Experience working in an agile and collaborative development environment
- Good communication and documentation skills
- A reliable and accountable approach to delivering work
- Comfortable collaborating with people from different technical and professional backgrounds
- Willingness to learn and develop skills across different areas of software and systems engineering
- Basic knowledge of Linux and command-line tools
Desirable skills
Any of the following would be beneficial, but candidates are not expected to have experience in all of them:
- Experience integrating frontend and backend systems
- Experience with HTTP, REST APIs, JSON or GraphQL
- Experience with React or another modern frontend framework
- Experience with Docker, Kubernetes or cloud infrastructure
- Experience with CI/CD or infrastructure as code
- Experience developing or supporting customer portals, developer portals, self-service applications or ticketing systems
- Experience with relational or NoSQL databases

Please note that the base pay range may vary in line with our hybrid working policy and individual base pay will be determined based on job-related factors which may include knowledge, skills, experience, and location.
