Manager, Accounting - ASC 842 Lease AccountingOverviewThe Global Business Solutions Center (GBSC) is a shared services organization within Mastercard whose mission is to add value to our partners and serve our customers by delivering operational excellence, enhanced customer experiences, and focused business results.
The Manager, Accounting will play a key leadership role within Mastercard's global controllership organization, with responsibility for overseeing the accounting, reporting, and governance of Mastercard's global lease portfolio. This position will partner closely with Corporate Real Estate, Technical Accounting, Controllership, Financial Systems, and regional finance teams to ensure accurate and timely accounting and reporting of lease-related activities in accordance with applicable accounting standards.
The ideal candidate will possess strong technical accounting expertise, experience managing complex lease accounting processes, and a passion for continuous improvement and operational excellence. This role aligns with the broader expectations for GBSC accounting leadership, including ownership of accounting close activities, financial reporting, stakeholder engagement, and team leadership.
Role
- Lead and oversee Mastercard's global lease accounting processes, ensuring compliance with ASC 842, IFRS 16, and company accounting policies.
- Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting close activities related to lease accounting, including journal entries, reconciliations, and financial reporting requirements.
- Review and approve lease accounting transactions, including new leases, modifications, reassessments, renewals, terminations, and impairments.
- Oversee the accounting and reporting of right-of-use (ROU) assets, lease liabilities, and related disclosures.
- Partner with Corporate Real Estate, Corporate Accounting, and business stakeholders to evaluate lease arrangements and identify embedded lease considerations.
- Review general ledger account reconciliations and investigate significant fluctuations, reconciling items, and lease-related variances.
- Coordinate the preparation and review of lease-related footnotes, roll-forward schedules, and supporting documentation for internal and external reporting requirements.
- Support internal and external audits by providing technical accounting guidance, preparing audit support schedules, and responding to audit inquiries.
- Collaborate with Financial Systems and technology teams to optimize lease accounting systems, reporting capabilities, and automation opportunities.
- Drive continuous process improvement initiatives focused on standardization, automation, efficiency, and control enhancement across lease accounting operations.
- Identify and remediate risks within lease accounting processes while maintaining a strong internal control environment.
- Monitor project milestones and deliverables related to lease accounting initiatives and system enhancements, ensuring alignment with stakeholder expectations.
- Provide leadership, coaching, and development opportunities to accounting professionals while fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and operational excellence.
All About You
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
- CPA required; MBA or other advanced degree preferred.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including lease accounting, controllership, financial reporting, or corporate accounting responsibilities.
- Strong technical accounting knowledge of ASC 842, IFRS 16, and lease accounting concepts, including lease classification, modifications, reassessments, impairments, and disclosure requirements.
- Experience managing accounting and reporting activities for large and complex lease portfolios within a multinational organization.
- Experience supporting external reporting requirements and maintaining compliance with internal control frameworks.
- Prior experience working with lease accounting platforms, ERP systems, and financial reporting tools (CoStar, Visual Lease, LeaseAccelerator, Oracle EBS / Oracle Fusion, SAP, or similar systems).
- Demonstrated ability to interpret accounting guidance and apply technical accounting principles to complex business arrangements.
- Experience identifying and implementing process improvements and automation opportunities that enhance efficiency, scalability, and control.
- Proven ability to build trusted relationships and influence cross-functional stakeholders across multiple business functions and geographic regions.
- Strong project management skills with a demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and meet tight deadlines.
- Excellent verbal, written, and executive-level communication skills.
- Strong customer service mindset, business acumen, and attention to detail.
- Previous people leadership or team management experience preferred.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced global environment while maintaining a high degree of accuracy and accountability.
