Job Description
**Remote in US**
We are seeking a hands-on, versatile IT Manager to take ownership of a business unit's IT infrastructure, security, and operational maturity end to end. This is a role for someone who thrives on ambiguity, learns fast, and turns informal process into documented, repeatable structure, while still being comfortable rolling up their sleeves for day-to-day system administration and end-user support.
The IT Manager will manage Windows, Linux, and cloud environments, ensuring all IT assets are secured, updated, and fully functional. This position requires someone who can work independently, lead a small team, rapidly build deep fluency in a complex, and bring structure to a dynamic IT infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
Infrastructure, Cloud & Security: Hands-on ownership of servers, cloud environments, networking, and SaaS platforms. Monitor, patch, and secure all IT assets. Manage endpoint security (antivirus, encryption, firewalls). Interpret vulnerability and security assessment findings and drive remediation to closure.
Systems Fluency & Documentation: Rapidly develop deep, hands-on fluency across a complex environment. Build and maintain documentation, runbooks, and knowledge-transfer processes for critical systems, so operational knowledge is captured and documented.
Automation & Modern Tooling: Use scripting (Python, PowerShell) and AI-assisted engineering tools (e.g. Claude Code, Codex-class coding assistants) to automate repetitive tasks and improve operational efficiency.
Compliance & Governance (GRC): Ensure IT systems adhere to company security policies, ITIL-aligned service management practices, and compliance frameworks. Assist with internal and external audits by providing documentation. Maintain accurate inventory and access control records.
Team Leadership: Manage and mentor IT team members, overseeing day-to-day operations and priorities. Collaborate with the broader IT organisation to improve practices.
Onboarding & Offboarding: Manage IT setup for new hires, including through acquisitions. Provision, configure, and deprovision user accounts, access, and credentials. Ensure secure offboarding, including asset retrieval and data security.
Requirements
Technical Skills & Experience:
- 5-8+ years of hands-on IT experience, with demonstrated versatility across infrastructure, network, cloud, and application layers, not siloed in one domain.
- 1-2+ years leading or mentoring a small technical team, with the ability to delegate, coach, and take ownership of day-to-day priorities.
- Strong knowledge of Windows and Linux server/workstation environments; Active Directory, Azure AD, and other IAM solutions.
- Deep, hands-on cloud experience (Azure preferred; AWS or Google Cloud a plus).
- ITIL framework knowledge (certification a plus).
- Proficient scripting for automation (Python, PowerShell).
- Working fluency with AI-assisted engineering and ops tools (e.g. Claude Code, Codex-class assistants) to accelerate scripting, documentation, and troubleshooting.
- Networking fundamentals: routers, switches, firewalls, VPN administration.
- SaaS platform administration across a multi-vendor environment.
- Patch management and endpoint security tooling.
- Comfortable interpreting vulnerability and security assessment output and driving remediation (prior hands-on penetration testing experience a plus, not required).
- IBM i / AS400 administration a plus, not required.
Soft Skills:
- Thrives in ambiguity; comfortable building process and structure where little formal documentation exists.
- Self-directed learner who can absorb complex, undocumented systems quickly and independently.
- Energized by turning informal, tribal knowledge into repeatable, documented process.
- Strong ownership mentality: steps up, takes accountability, and drives outcomes without waiting for direction.
- Excellent communication skills, able to translate technical detail for both technical peers and business stakeholders.
