Embedded Software Engineer

AustinFullTime$100k–$150kPosted Aug 6, 2026

About the Role

We're a small, venture-backed robotics company building multi-mission ground robots engineered to operate in the most demanding and hazardous environments — think emergency response, industrial operations, and defense. Our platforms go where humans cannot and other robots will not: stairs, rubble, trenches, confined spaces, and extreme operating conditions.

We're looking for an Embedded Software Engineer to own the software that drives our electro-mechanical systems. You'll have real ownership — defining what to build, how to test it, and how to deploy it across both simulated and real environments. You'll work closely with hardware engineers and shape how users collect data, teleoperate our platforms, and integrate modular sensors.

What You'll Do

  • Understand system requirements, push back on unnecessary scope, and translate the remaining requirements into reliable end-to-end solutions.

  • Partner with teammates and end users to design hyper-critical features from the ground up.

  • Prototype, validate, and iteratively refine features across the full stack.

  • Develop lightweight frontends to demonstrate and simulate feature utility.

  • Test features in both lab and simulated environments before real-world deployment.

  • Optimize software for network communications performance and reliability.

  • Debug complex issues surfaced during testing or field operation.

  • Collaborate with hardware system owners on integration and issue resolution.

  • Write essential documentation that clearly communicates design intent.

What We're Looking For

Must-haves:

  • Experience with ROS (ROS 1 and/or ROS 2) for robot software integration.

  • Proficiency in C/C++ for embedded software development on robotics platforms.

  • Hands-on experience with data collection, teleoperation, and modular sensor integration in robotic systems.

  • Experience developing and testing software in both simulated and real-world environments.

  • Strong Linux platform experience for development and deployment.

Nice to have:

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with electrical and mechanical engineers on hardware-software integration.

  • Familiarity with Python, and basic web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) for prototyping frontends.

  • Background from aerospace, defense, or industrial robotics environments (e.g. NASA, national labs, defense contractors).

Experience level: 1–3 years of relevant professional experience.

Visa sponsorship: Not available. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $100,000 – $150,000 USD annually, depending on experience.

  • Early-stage equity participation.

  • High-autonomy, high-impact role at a small, focused team.

Location

This is an on-site role based in Austin, TX. Candidates should expect to work primarily from our Austin facility.
