Senior Software Engineer II
Are you a Systems Engineer looking for an innovative role?
Do you enjoy being part of a team that works with a diverse range of technology?
About our Team:
Elsevier Health applies innovation, facilitates insights, and helps drive more informed decision-making for our customers across global health. We support health providers by providing accessible, trusted evidence-based information; prepare more medical and nursing students with effective tools and resources; provide insights that help clinicians improve patient outcomes; and supports a more personalized and localized healthcare experience. All for the benefit of every patient.
Our team is dedicated to unlocking the rich knowledge embedded within Elsevier’s content through our semantic data platform; this empowers researchers, clinicians, and innovators worldwide to gain new insights, make informed decisions, and accelerate progress across research, healthcare, and life sciences. We lead the ongoing transformation of Elsevier’s vast, unstructured information into richly interconnected knowledge graphs that capture the full depth and nuance of scientific meaning. Through our dynamic knowledge discovery platform, we combine graph-powered agentic AI with advanced search technologies to deliver contextually relevant, trustworthy, and precise answers. As part of the Data Engineering team, you’ll contribute to the systems and infrastructure that fuel this mission. This role focuses on building reusable platform components and delivering Data Products that enable scalable, reliable, and high-performance data solutions across Elsevier’s ecosystem.
About the Role:
We are looking for a Senior Data/Platform Engineer II who can lead the design and implementation of complex systems, mentor team members, and contribute to our evolving data engineering architecture. You’ll work on large-scale data pipelines, orchestration frameworks, and services that support our data products — collaborating closely with product, platform, and other engineering teams to deliver impactful, high-quality solutions.
Responsibilities:
Design and develop scalable data processing workflows and microservices using Spark, Kafka Streams, and Kubernetes.
Write modular, testable Scala code following software engineering best practices and functional programming principles.
Lead the implementation of system components across multiple services and troubleshoot complex issues in distributed data systems.
Participate in architecture discussions, design reviews, and other engineering activities to deliver high-quality solutions.
Develop and maintain robust data models to support analytical and operational business requirements.
Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to translate business needs into scalable engineering solutions.
Mentor junior engineers by supporting onboarding, technical guidance, and knowledge sharing.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives by promoting engineering best practices and team collaboration.
Requirements:
5+ years of professional experience in software or data engineering, with a strong track record in building and optimizing large-scale batch and streaming data systems.
Hands-on experience with Spark, Kafka, Databricks, and Scala; Java knowledge is an added advantage.
Strong understanding of distributed systems, performance optimization, and semantic technologies such as RDF and data modeling.
Experience working with graph-based data models or knowledge graph architectures.
Proficiency in AWS services such as S3, EMR, Athena/Glue, and SQS, along with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools.
Experience with software development practices, version control using Git, and CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Jenkins.
Ability to independently drive technical solutions from design through deployment while working in Agile development environments.
Experience building reusable engineering platforms and implementing observability best practices, including logging, monitoring, metrics, and alerting.
