Ruby on Rails Development

  • Build, maintain, and enhance Ruby on Rails applications, APIs, and backend services.
  • Develop scalable business logic using Rails conventions, ActiveRecord, controllers, and service objects.
  • Design and maintain RESTful APIs while integrating third-party services and external APIs.
  • Collaborate with frontend developers using React, Vue, or Stimulus when required.
  • Contribute to feature development from planning and architecture through deployment.

Database Design & Performance

  • Design and maintain PostgreSQL or MySQL database schemas.
  • Optimize queries, indexes, and database performance for scalability.
  • Implement caching strategies using Redis, Memcached, or similar technologies.
  • Manage background jobs using Sidekiq, Resque, or equivalent frameworks.
  • Monitor and improve application performance under increasing workloads.

Testing, CI/CD & Code Quality

  • Write and maintain unit, integration, and system tests using RSpec, Minitest, or Capybara.
  • Maintain strong test coverage and high code quality standards.
  • Participate in code reviews and contribute to clean, maintainable codebases.
  • Support CI/CD pipelines and automated deployment workflows.
  • Enforce coding standards using RuboCop and other quality tools.

Performance, Security & Reliability

  • Optimize API response times and overall application performance.
  • Monitor applications using tools such as New Relic, Datadog, Rollbar, or Honeybadger.
  • Troubleshoot production issues and deploy fixes with minimal downtime.
  • Implement secure authentication, authorization, and application security best practices.
  • Ensure applications comply with data privacy and security standards where applicable.

Collaboration & Technical Ownership

  • Work closely with product managers, designers, and engineers to scope and estimate features.
  • Participate in sprint planning, architecture discussions, and technical decision-making.
  • Document APIs, workflows, and technical systems for long-term maintainability.
  • Continuously improve engineering standards, development workflows, and application architecture.

Required Experience & Skills

  • 3+ years of professional Ruby on Rails development experience.
  • Strong proficiency with Ruby, Rails, ActiveRecord, and MVC architecture.
  • Experience working with PostgreSQL or MySQL databases.
  • Experience with background job frameworks such as Sidekiq or Resque.
  • Strong understanding of RESTful APIs and backend application architecture.
  • Experience with Git workflows and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience writing automated tests using RSpec, Minitest, or similar frameworks.
  • Excellent problem-solving, debugging, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote, collaborative environment.

Nice to Have

  • Experience integrating React, Vue, or Stimulus with Rails applications.
  • Experience deploying applications to AWS, GCP, Heroku, or similar cloud platforms.
  • Familiarity with Redis, Memcached, or other caching technologies.
  • Experience building SaaS, fintech, healthcare, or e-commerce applications.
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, or modern DevOps workflows.

What Success Looks Like

  • Reliable, scalable applications with excellent uptime and performance.
  • Strong automated test coverage and minimal production issues.
  • Clean, maintainable code that reduces technical debt.
  • Continuous improvements to application performance and engineering processes.
  • Effective collaboration with product and engineering teams.

Interview Process

  • Initial Recruiter Screening
  • Video Interview with Pavago Recruiter
  • Technical Assessment (Ruby on Rails API or Backend Feature Exercise)
  • Client Interview with Engineering Team
  • Offer & Onboarding

What Happens After You Apply

Right after you apply, you’ll receive an email invitation from Spark Hire to record your Intro Video. This short, self-recorded video is the final step that completes your application.

Instead of repeating yourself through multiple screening calls, you’ll introduce yourself once, and your video will be shared with the hiring team. This allows hiring managers to evaluate your communication style early, making future interviews more meaningful while reducing unnecessary interview rounds.

Don’t overthink it—you can record your video as many times as you’d like before submitting it. Only your final submission will be reviewed. Please keep an eye on both your inbox and spam folder for your Spark Hire invitation.
