JOB TITLE:
Branding Iron Assistant Editor/Lead Copy Editor
JOB PURPOSE:
Supports the editorial production of The Branding Iron by leading copy editing, proofreading, and page production. Assists the Editor-in-Chief in maintaining accuracy, AP style, publication quality, and production deadlines while supervising the copy editing team.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Serves as the lead copy editor for The Branding Iron, ensuring accuracy, clarity, grammar, spelling, and AP style compliance.
- Reviews and edits articles, headlines, captions, and other publication content prior to production.
- Designs, paginates, and prepares newspaper pages for print and digital publication.
- Proofreads page layouts and final production files to ensure publication quality and accuracy.
- Supervises and mentors copy editors, assigning editing responsibilities and reviewing completed work.
- Assists in maintaining editorial consistency, style standards, and publication deadlines.
- Meets regularly with the Editor-in-Chief to review assignments, production schedules, and publication priorities.
- Collaborates with editors, writers, photographers, and designers throughout the production process.
- Assists with breaking news production and special publication projects as assigned.
- Maintains regular office hours of at least 15 hours per week and participates in editorial meetings and production nights.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Full-time student
- Minimum 2.5 GPA
- Must be available to start work Aug. 24, 2026
- Must be available for publication deadlines on Sundays and Wednesday nights.
- Must be available Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for training.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong writing, editing, proofreading, and grammar skills.
- Working knowledge of AP Style or willingness to learn and apply it consistently.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced newsroom environment.
- Strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to mentor fellow student staff.
- Experience with newspaper layout or Adobe InDesign is preferred, but training may be provided.
- Ability to work evenings and production deadlines as required.

WORK LOCATION:
On-campus: This position provides vital support to campus customers, and the successful candidate must be available to work and perform essential job functions on campus, understanding our location is at 7,220 feet above sea level.
