Job Summary

As an Instrumentation & Control Engineer, you will provide specialist technical expertise across Instrumented Protective systems & Process Control systems in support of the safe, reliable and efficient operation of the production assets.

You will serve as a senior discipline engineer for field instrumentation, safety instrumented systems, fire and gas systems, process control systems, alarm management and automation technologies. Working closely with Operations, Maintenance, Projects, Automation Digital Security specialists and bp Solutions teams, you will identify opportunities to improve process safety, asset reliability, equipment performance and operational efficiency.

The role combines hands-on technical engineering with leadership responsibilities through technical coaching, mentoring, problem solving, risk management, incident investigations, barrier stewardship and continuous improvement activities. You will provide discipline guidance to technicians, contractors and early career engineers, influence technical decisions, and contribute to the development of engineering capability, standards and best practices across the asset.

Job Responsibilities

Provide senior instrumentation and control engineering expertise and support to enable safe, reliable and efficient operations and maintenance.

Serve as process safety barrier owner for I&C barriers (BPCS, SIS, Alarms & Operator Response, F&G/Shutdown systems). Identify and improve the health and performance of barriers, ensuring risks are understood and effectively managed.

Maintain and continuously improve alarm system performance through alarm management, alarm rationalization, KPI monitoring and implementation of sustainable solutions that enhance operator effectiveness, process safety and operational performance.

Provide discipline leadership during risk assessments, HAZOPs, LOPAs, SIL assessments and other process safety activities.

Ensure automation system digital security risks are understood, cybersecurity barriers are proactively managed, and improvement plans are effectively implemented.

Deliver pragmatic engineering solutions that improve process safety, production efficiency, reliability and equipment availability.

Provide technical leadership in troubleshooting and resolution of complex problems related to instrumentation, process control, packaged units control systems, telecommunication systems, and measurement systems.

Provide equipment ownership for assigned equipment and systems, ensuring equipment performance, reliability, lifecycle risks and maintenance requirements are appropriately managed.

Develop and update equipment strategies, procedures and technical documentation based on equipment specifications, technical practices, performance feedback, failure investigations and maintenance history reviews.

Ensure inspection, testing, maintenance and condition monitoring tasks within the Maintenance Management System are aligned with the technical intent of Equipment Strategies and equipment performance requirements.

Perform reliability analysis for instrumentation and control equipment using surveillance, maintenance and condition monitoring data, identify performance gaps, and develop sustainable improvement plans.

Maintain effective lifecycle management strategies for instrumentation, control and safety systems, reducing risk of obsolescence and equipment failure.

Lead or support investigations, RCFAs, vulnerability assessments, defect elimination initiatives and continuous improvement programs.

Record relevant learnings in shared learning systems, incorporate them into local activities, and escalate high-priority lessons across the organization.

Provide specialist technical inputs to support Management of Change (MOC) process, brownfield projects, shutdowns and turnarounds.

Coach and mentor technicians, contractors and early career engineers while promoting a culture of technical excellence.

Support competency development within the ICE discipline and contribute to regional and global Communities of Practice.

Job Qualifications

This role is only for Egyptian nationals.

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or a related field.

Proven experience in instrumentation and control engineering experience in oil & gas, petrochemical, LNG, or other major process industries, including support to operating facilities and brownfield modifications.

Strong collaboration and communication skills.

Strong Presenting skills for technical information.

Demonstrated ability to influence stakeholders and provide technical leadership without direct authority.

Essential expertise:

Specification, sizing and selection of field instrumentation, analyzers, control valves, actuated valves,  and associated instrumentation technologies.

Maintenance and troubleshooting of field instrumentation and measurement systems.

Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS).

Fire & Gas detection and shutdown systems.

Distributed Control Systems (DCS).

Integrated Control & Safety Systems (ICSS). Experience with Yokogawa systems is advantgeous.

Cybersecurity principles and practices for industrial automation and control systems.

Industrial communication networks and protocols.

Alarm management according to IEC 62682.

Control loop design, optimization, tuning and performance management in operating facilities.

Strong understanding of process safety principles, barrier management and risk management.

Experience in Functional Safety Lifecycle activities in accordance with IEC 61511, including HAZOPs, LOPAs and SIL verification studies. FSEng certification is advantageous.

Experience supporting Management of Change (MoC) processes, brownfield projects, design reviews, FATs and SATs.

Working knowledge of electrical and instrumentation installations in hazardous areas in accordance with IEC 60079.

Experience supporting incident investigations and Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA).

Experience supporting process safety barrier performance monitoring and improvement activities


Travel Requirement:

Up to 10% travel should be expected with this role
