Medical Laboratory Scientist I – PRN Nights

Location: AdventHealth South Overland Park

Schedule: PRN Nights | 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM

The Medical Laboratory Scientist I performs clinical laboratory testing and related analytical procedures that support the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. This role performs pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical laboratory functions while ensuring compliance with CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission, and other applicable regulatory standards. The Medical Laboratory Scientist maintains quality assurance, supports laboratory operations, contributes to performance improvement initiatives, and collaborates with healthcare teams to provide timely and accurate laboratory results.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform laboratory testing and analytical procedures accurately and efficiently in accordance with established laboratory policies and standard operating procedures.

  • Perform pre-analytical activities, including specimen collection, specimen processing, equipment function checks, quality control, inventory management, and supply stocking.

  • Complete post-analytical activities, including result verification, reporting, documentation, and technical support.

  • Maintain laboratory equipment through routine maintenance, cleaning, calibration, quality control, and troubleshooting.

  • Practice laboratory safety by following PPE, hand hygiene, hazardous chemical handling, biological safety, and hazardous waste disposal procedures.

  • Participate in laboratory quality assurance, proficiency testing, and performance improvement initiatives.

  • Evaluate new laboratory methods, instrumentation, and procedures while assisting with special projects and data collection.

  • Maintain clean, organized laboratory workspaces through routine cleaning and disinfection.

  • Support clinical staff by providing laboratory education, technical guidance, and workflow assistance as appropriate.

  • Serve as a preceptor for new employees and students when assigned, documenting orientation and competency activities.

  • Provide guidance to laboratory technicians and support staff while assisting with customer service concerns within established guidelines.

  • Maintain compliance with CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission, AdventHealth policies, and all applicable local, state, and federal regulations.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of clinical laboratory testing, instrumentation, and analytical procedures

  • Technical proficiency in laboratory testing, quality control, and specimen processing

  • Knowledge of laboratory safety, infection prevention, hazardous chemical handling, and biological specimen management

  • Ability to independently prioritize workflow and adapt to changing laboratory demands

  • Knowledge of laboratory regulations, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance

  • Ability to perform equipment maintenance, quality assessment, and troubleshooting

  • Strong analytical, mathematical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to accuracy

  • Ability to educate and train laboratory staff and students

  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively with physicians, nurses, laboratory professionals, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams

  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office and Laboratory Information Systems (LIS)

  • Ability to maintain accurate laboratory documentation and patient records

  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English

  • Excellent customer service, organizational, and multitasking skills

  • Ability to safely handle infectious biological specimens, hazardous chemicals, and laboratory reagents

  • Knowledge of molecular laboratory techniques, DNA/RNA extraction, stem cell isolation, and histological preparation — Preferred

  • Knowledge of molecular assays and advanced laboratory techniques — Preferred


 

Education

  • Associate Degree — Required

Field of Study

  • Laboratory Science, Medical Laboratory Technology, Chemical Science, or Biological Science from an accredited institution.

OR

  • Successful completion of an approved U.S. Military Medical Laboratory Training Program meeting regulatory requirements.

OR

  • Qualified as High Complexity Testing Personnel under applicable CLIA regulations.



Work Experience

  • Previous clinical laboratory experience is welcomed but not required.

Licensure & Certifications

  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certification is strongly preferred where applicable.

  • Additional certification or licensure requirements may apply based on department or state regulations.

  • Due to national credentialing updates, previous MT (ASCP) and MT (AMT) certifications are recognized as MLS (ASCP) and MLS (AMT).

Pay Range:

$24.01 - $44.65
