Chief Scientific Officer, Oncology, Danaher Diagnostics

The Chief Scientific Officer (CSO), Oncology, Danaher Diagnostics, will help accelerate the company’s portfolio of innovative solutions through organic and inorganic efforts in all aspects of the oncology diagnostic journey. 

Reporting to the Franchise Head Oncology, Danaher Diagnostics, this position will be the most senior clinical/disease/development and translational expert accountable for cocreating portfolio strategies, translational design as well as clinical design and development plans.

The person will provide medical/clinical, scientific, and technological insights and related expertise to the Diagnostics Operating Companies (OpCos) in developed economies and high-growth market countries/regions. Working with other science, technology, and business leaders, the CSO for Oncology, Danaher Diagnostics will use a strong network and knowledge of emerging trends to help identify and evaluate early-stage technology investments, M&A opportunities, and organic investments to bring industry- leading Oncology-focused diagnostics solutions to market.

Job Description

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Cocreate as technical and clinical expert the development of Oncology science and technology strategy and support OpCo, cross-OpCo and cross-platform execution.
  • Member of core science & technology decision committees assuring deep disease level input into product development decisions
  • Contribute into clinical protocol design and Data review assuring regulatory and access success as well as accelerated timelines.
  • Partner with Platform and venture personnel to develop investment/innovation frameworks with focus on early-stage investment to close technology gaps and identify/invest in “white space” disruptive technologies.
  • Influence the external engagement strategy assuring institutional relationships, collaborations, and investments for Danaher to build a pipeline of leading-edge thinking and technology sources in the area of Oncology diagnostics.
  • Cultivate engagements between Danaher and key opinion leaders (KOLs) in oncology and pathology; possess in depth knowledge of biopharma drug pipelines in oncology and anticipate the diagnostic needs of pharma (from Research Use Only (RUO) to Clinical Trial Assay (CTA) to In Vitro Diagnostics (IVD) inclusive of Companion Diagnostics (CDx) and Lab Developed Tests (LDTs).
  • Create a franchise core science team assuring the hybrid team composition of opco and platform results in seamless knowledge flow and informed decision making.
  • Support Danaher Diagnostic Operating Company Medical and Scientific Affairs and Government Affairs organizations on their strategy so that it maximizes patient impact at scale.

  • Review and endorse franchise medical plans as well as IIS strategy
  • Identify new research opportunities beyond the OpCo or Platform core R&D efforts.
  • Support strategic IP management, as well as guidance around FDA and international regulatory matters partnering with Platform and OpCo legal counsel.
  • Cultivate new technical, business and talent within the market using the Danaher brand.
  • Embrace and demonstrate the Danaher Business System theories, tool and culture .

The essential requirements of the job include:

  • Combined M.D. and PhD. degrees preferred, or MD/PhD with 14+ years’ experience and established research track record as evidenced by publications and/or professional accomplishments. PhDs with extensive clinical or diagnostics experience would also be considered. Board certification in Medical Oncology highly desirable.
  • Extensive experience in the Diagnostics, Pharmaceutical and/or Life Sciences industries in clinical development roles; Expertise with related Oncology-focused diagnostic applications and technologies, patents, and other intellectual property
  • Proven track record of success in oncology disease human clinical trial research and/or clinical management of patients.
  • Experience having successfully led meaningfully sized R&D and/or Innovation functions.
  • Being open to contribute as individual leading tactics and core partnership deliverables as well as create followership of cross functional teams.
  • Ability to combine and apply scientific/technical and business knowledge and demonstrate strong business acumen and ability to make balanced decisions.
  • Excellent process knowledge, experience, and skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, organization, communication and influencing skills.
  • Extensive, active, and relevant professional network.
  • Experience managing people and teams including budget responsibility.
  • Ability to build technical communities internally and externally.
  • Proven success mentoring and growing diverse scientific talent.
  • Practical knowledge and experience working with relevant regulatory bodies, such as the FDA, SFDA, EMEA regulatory bodies (IVDR), etc.
  • Knowledge, experience, and career interest in leveraging unstructured data sets derived from multi-modal sources such as digital imaging, multiplexed biomarker profiling, and genetic analysis to improve clinical relevance and generate new applications and approaches for cancer. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in project, portfolio and/or program management; manufacturing optimization; commercial/customer-facing functions
  • Experience in regulatory submissions and clinical development planning, conducting, and reporting clinical trial results (IVD or pharmaceuticals), regulatory processes
  • Experience influencing various stakeholders to drive change and achieve results in a dynamic, complex environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership in the successful management of clinical programs, including interpretation, summarization, and presentation of scientific data.

Domestic and international travel is required (approximately 25%)
