Job Description:

At Regions, the Mainframe Systems Engineer installs and maintains mainframe operating systems ensuring the stability, performance and security of our mainframe environment while driving innovation and continuous improvement.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Evaluates system specifications, input/output processes, and working parameters for hardware/software compatibility
  • Troubleshoots and resolves complex technical issues related to mainframe systems and applications
  • Administers, configures, and maintains mainframe systems, including hardware, operating systems, and software components
  • Maintains operational effectiveness and efficiency by monitoring, evaluating, and adjusting mainframe operating systems
  • Maintains quality service by establishing and enforcing organization standards
  • Maintains installation records by documenting system configurations, procedures, and best practices
  • Resolves problems by determining cause, providing technical assistance to applications and other support staff
  • Develops and implements backup and disaster recovery strategies to ensure business continuity
  • Covers on call 24x7 on a rotating basis for problem resolution and SEV1 incidents
  • Ensures compliance with risk management programs, rules and regulations, and cybersecurity practices; identifies opportunities for and supports process improvements; applies disciplined change management practices 

This position is exempt from timekeeping requirements under the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not eligible for overtime pay.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Business, or a related field and six (6) years of mainframe infrastructure technical software and hardware analysis, programming, and installation experience
  • Or High School Diploma or GED with ten (10) years of experience of mainframe infrastructure technical software and hardware analysis, programming, and installation
  • Experience in installation and support of Mainframe system products including ZOS, CICS, MQ, DB2, Storage, Automation, ZLINUX or Networking
  • Experience in problem determination, installation and support of mainframe products, disaster recovery experience and knowledge, and performance and tuning experience
  • Experience in opening, managing, solving, and closing problems with vendor support centers

  • Administer and support IBM z/OS storage infrastructure including DASD, tape, and virtual storage environments.
  • Administer and support IBM Geographically Dispersed Parallel Sysplex (GDPS) environments.
  • Manage and maintain IBM DFSMS components including SMS, ACS routines, DFSMSdss, DFHSM, and RMM.
  • Perform storage capacity planning, forecasting, and utilization analysis to ensure optimal resource allocation.
  • Configure and support IBM DS8000 storage subsystems, FlashCopy, Metro Mirror, and Global Mirror technologies.
  • Monitor storage performance and implement tuning recommendations to improve system efficiency.
  • Develop and maintain storage standards, policies, procedures, and disaster recovery documentation.
  • Support storage provisioning, volume management, catalog management, and dataset migration activities.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve storage-related incidents, performance issues, and hardware failures.
  • Coordinate storage upgrades, maintenance activities, and vendor engagements.
  • Participate in disaster recovery testing and business continuity planning initiatives.
  • Monitor and maintain business continuity and disaster recovery solutions for mission-critical z/OS systems.
  • Configure, test, and troubleshoot GDPS/PPRC, GDPS/Active-Active, and Global Mirror environments.
  • Support Metro Mirror, Global Mirror, HyperSwap, and replication technologies across multiple data centers.
  • Perform planned and unplanned recovery exercises, failover testing, and disaster recovery validation.
  • Monitor system health and replication status using GDPS automation and management tools.
  • Analyze and resolve complex GDPS, Sysplex, replication, and availability issues.
  • Develop and maintain disaster recovery runbooks, procedures, and technical documentation.
  • Participate in 24x7 production support and on-call rotations for critical infrastructure.
  • Assist with audits, compliance reviews, and business continuity assessments.

Preferred

  • Expert knowledge of IBM z/OS, DFSMS, DFHSM, DFSMSdss, and RMM.
  • Experience with IBM DS8000 storage platforms and replication technologies.
  • Strong understanding of storage performance monitoring and capacity management.
  • Strong experience supporting IBM GDPS environments.
  • Proficiency in JCL, REXX, TSO/ISPF, and SMP/E.
  • Experience supporting large-scale enterprise mainframe environments.
  • Extensive knowledge of Parallel Sysplex architecture and Coupling Facility technologies.
  • Experience with PPRC, Metro Mirror, Global Mirror, and HyperSwap implementations.
  • Experience conducting disaster recovery testing and recovery operations

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of z/OS infrastructure support experience.
  • IBM GDPS certification or equivalent experience.
  • Familiarity with z/OS system programming, storage administration, and network technologies.

Regions will not sponsor applicants for work visas for this position at this time. Applicants for this position must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

This position is currently offsite, preferably close to a Regions office within our retail branch footprint (click here to see our locations). Associates will work from their home primarily and may be expected to go on site for meetings or other events as needed.

Pay ranges are job specific and are provided as a point-of-market reference for compensation decisions. Other factors which directly impact pay for individual associates include: experience, skills, knowledge, contribution, job location and, most importantly, performance in the job role. As these factors vary by individuals, pay will also vary among individual associates within the same job.

The target information listed below is based on the Metropolitan Statistical Area Market Range for where the position is located and level of the position.
