Indirect Tax Risk & Assurance Analyst, Intl Indirect Tax Controllership

Amazon is seeking an Indirect Tax Risk & Assurance Analyst to join our International Indirect Tax Controllership (IITXC) team. This team operates as a core component of the Second Line of Defense (2LOD) within Amazon's Tax Governance, Risk and Assurance (GRA) Program, providing independent oversight, periodic assurance testing, and residual risk reporting across Amazon's international indirect tax operations.
You will perform control testing, extracting and analysing data, in order to assess the strength of controls in place to manage Amazon's indirect tax risks. Following data analysis, you will draw conclusions on accuracy and control effectiveness, collaborating with other teams to agree findings and remediation actions required. Testing will be routine and adhoc and involve working on extremely large data sets, requiring use of tools and AI to maximise testing impact at scale.
The role covers all regions excluding North America, with a primary focus on International Stores (Retail and Marketplace), and is expected to expand to all business lines in the future. You will be expected to enhance testing programs and methodology where improvements can be made.
This is an individual contributor role requiring VAT/indirect tax experience, strong analytical skills, and the ability to operate independently in ambiguous, multi-jurisdictional environments.


Key job responsibilities
•Operate recurring operational and transactional data extraction as part of 2LoD risk evaluation.
•Data analysis and manipulation of extremely large data sets, utilizing data analytical tools wherever possible.
•Data interpretation against expected results of assurance testing and working with other teams to assess the impact of findings on the risk profile.
•Overseeing the completion of actions set to remediate issues found within assurance testing, including generating associated metrics for leadership.
•Propose and implement additional testing plans based on outcomes of testing.
•Identify opportunities to enhance controls, monitoring approaches, and operational risk practices.
•Leverage and develop tools and AI to improve efficiency and enable assurance activities at scale.
•Consult with Tax Planning experts on indirect tax impact of findings identified during testing.



A day in the life

Basic qualifications

- Experience with data analytics platforms (Power BI, Python, SQL, Tableau), or experience working with Excel, reporting tools, and large-scale data mining tools, such as Power BI, Python, SQL, or Tableau
- Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting or related field, or a Bachelor's degree and experience in tax, finance or a related analytical field
- Ability to analyze operational and transactional data to identify control gaps, weaknesses, or inconsistencies and formulate actionable risk mitigation recommendations.
- Strong interest in technology and AI; ability to work alongside technical colleagues on automated control design or GenAI-assisted assurance workflows.
- Experience operating in multi-jurisdictional environments within large organizations or commercial marketplaces with complex indirect tax obligations.
- Ability to communicate complex tax and risk findings clearly to both technical and non-technical (non-tax) audiences, including senior leadership.
- Experience working collaboratively and independently across functional boundaries with business operations, tax planning, tax compliance, internal audit, and risk/monitoring teams.
- Experience in large multinational business, with a significant portion in a VAT/GST planning, advisory, audit or assurance capacity, or 3+ years’ experience in global tax/law/accounting practice in indirect tax (VAT/GST) advisory or assurance.
- Good indirect tax awareness across multiple jurisdictions (focus on EU VAT legislation).

Preferred qualifications

- Experience with assurance, control frameworks, or operational risk management, enabling effective review and validation of testing methodologies, evidence, and controls.
- Master's degree (LL.M., M.Sc.) in Tax or Law; professional qualification such as CTA, ADIT, ACA, or ACCA.
- Familiarity with SOX/internal controls testing, COSO framework, or similar risk and control methodologies.
- Experience with e-commerce, digital marketplace, or platform business models and the associated indirect tax complexities.
- Exposure to customs duties, digital services taxes, or withholding tax on digital transactions.
- Experience presenting to VP/Director-level stakeholders or external regulators and auditors.
- Project management experience or formal PM methodology (PMP, PRINCE2); ability to manage multiple concurrent workstreams and deliver to deadlines.
