Principal Engineer – Behind-the-Meter (BTM) Gas Generation

EPE is looking to recruit a Principal Engineer with a background in Behind-the-Meter Gas Generation to join our growing Energy Resources team. In this role, you will work closely with senior leadership to support our growth strategy and provide subject matter expertise both internally through coaching and developing staff, as well as externally to our clients.

  • Lead feasibility studies, generation strategy development, and technology selection for BTM gas generation serving hyperscale and AI data centers, including bridge-to-grid and phased interconnection strategies.
  • Evaluate reciprocating engine, gas turbine, combined cycle, and CHP/CCHP options on behalf of clients based on reliability, efficiency, emissions, fuel supply, lifecycle cost, scalability, deliverability, and maintainability.
  • Advise clients on sizing, redundancy, and integration of BTM generation with utility interconnections, BESS, microgrids, and mission-critical electrical infrastructure.
  • Develop Basis of Design (BOD) documents, design criteria, technical specifications, and engineering standards for client projects.
  • Serve as Owner’s Engineer or Independent Engineer through Front-End Engineering Design (FEED), detailed design, construction, commissioning, and early operations.
  • Review and provide technical direction on OEM proposals, EPC designs, and vendor engineering deliverables on behalf of clients.
  • Lead technical due diligence for developers, investors, and lenders on gas generation assets and development projects.
  • Support procurement evaluations, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), commissioning oversight, and performance validation as the client’s technical representative.
  • Provide technical oversight of load flow, short-circuit, protection coordination, dynamic stability, grounding, harmonic, and arc flash studies for BTM generation projects.
  • Serve as EPE’s subject matter expert for BTM gas generation and establish related engineering standards, methodologies, and service offerings.
  • Mentor engineers and provide technical oversight across multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Support business development through proposals, scopes of work, conference participation, and thought leadership.
  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies, market innovations, and best practices to enhance EPE’s offerings and capabilities.

 

 

 

Qualifications

Bring your passion, here's what’s needed:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related engineering discipline; master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in power generation, utility infrastructure, mission-critical facilities, or large industrial energy systems.
  • Strong understanding of the interface between BTM generation, plant controls, and Energy Management Systems (EMS).
  • Demonstrated experience leading engineering for gas generation facilities of 50 MW or larger; experience on projects exceeding 100 MW strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of natural gas reciprocating engines and gas turbine power plants, medium- and high-voltage electrical systems, utility interconnections, microgrids/EMS, and protection and control systems.
  • Experience serving as an Owner’s Engineer, Independent Engineer, EPC engineering lead, or utility engineering leader; consulting or client-facing advisory experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams across complex infrastructure projects.
  • Excellent technical writing, communication, and leadership skills, with the ability to operate independently in a senior client-facing role.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E. or P.Eng.) license preferred.
  • Experience supporting hyperscale or AI data center developments, including campuses exceeding 100 MW of critical load, is preferred.
  • Familiarity with major generation OEMs such as Rolls-Royce mtu, Wärtsilä, Caterpillar, GE Vernova, Siemens Energy, or Solar Turbines is preferred.
  • Knowledge of IEEE, IEC, NFPA standards and applicable utility and environmental regulations, including air permitting considerations for gas generation, is preferred.
  • Active participation in industry task forces and/or working groups is a plus

Location: This position is open to remote work in the US/Canada

Travel:  Occasional travel may be needed (20% or less)
