The Opportunity
Brightflag is growing. As a market leader, with a product that customers truly love, we’re scaling quickly. To continue to build and evolve our AI-first product we’re growing our Product & Engineering team. We have an exceptional team and a high bar. We challenge ourselves with ambitious goals, best practice standards and a drive for continuous improvement. If you want to grow, get better and accelerate your career within a driven Engineering team, Brightflag is the place for you.
As a Product Software Engineer, you’ll be a key contributor to a high-impact, fast-growing team delivering intuitive, innovative software used by major corporate legal departments worldwide. You’ll own features end-to-end—from design to deployment—across our backend stack and see your work go live quickly thanks to our agile release process. You will work on new features in an AI-native platform, and you’ll build them with AI-native tools too — our engineering team uses Claude Code as part of our daily workflow, reflecting how deeply AI is embedded in how we build, not just what we build. In a culture that prizes creativity, accountability, and collaboration, you’ll help shape how our customers experience Brightflag and the value they derive from it.
What You Will Be Doing
Own features end-to-end, from design through implementation, testing, release and operation, shipping with minimal rework and meeting acceptance criteria; take ownership of scope without needing a senior to partition the work for you.
Use Claude Code and other AI-assisted development tools as part of your daily workflow, to move faster, prototype solutions, and spend more of your time on the engineering problems that need real judgement.
Collaborate closely with Frontend, Backend, QA, Product, and Data Science teams to deliver high-quality features and enhancements.
Contribute meaningfully to the squad’s effectiveness - reviews, sprint planning, improving team tooling.
Translate product and customer requirements into clear technical designs for assigned features, producing lightweight design docs or ADRs and articulating trade-offs clearly.
Contribute clean, maintainable, well-tested code that keeps production defects low, that other engineers can easily build on, and that actively improves the reliability of features and services..
Build observability, logs, metrics and alerts, into what you ship, and take responsibility for the services you own once they are in production.
Respond effectively to incidents affecting your services, contribute useful post-incident analysis, and close out follow-up actions so issues don't recur (during normal working hours).
Participate in code reviews, providing thorough and timely feedback and adopting best practices from peers.
Implement product features and build REST APIs using our Java tech stack focused on the Spring Framework, common open-source libraries, and MySQL database.
Contribute to data modelling and reporting using the Elastic Stack, including creating Elasticsearch queries for dashboards and reports.
Work within and help refine our Agile development processes, raising risks and blockers early, and support our ongoing transition toward a fully automated CI/CD environment.
Skills & Experience
To be successful in the role, you need:
2-5 years of professional Java development experience
Solid experience with the Spring Framework
Good understanding of web applications, including exposing REST APIs & RESTful web services
Experience with SQL databases (preferably MySQL or PostgreSQL)

Strong problem-solving abilities, with experience independently designing solutions for medium-sized features and diagnosing issues in unfamiliar codebases
A collaborative and growth mindset, with a track record of taking ownership of scope without needing work broken down for you
Good communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally, including giving thorough, timely code review feedback
Experience writing unit and integration tests, and building observability (logging, metrics, alerting) into what you ship
A quality mindset - demonstrated experience producing high-quality code that improves reliability of features
Demonstrated ability to independently design solutions and produce design documentation
Comfortable owning production services end-to-end, including incident response and post-incident follow-through
