Role Overview

Senior Tax Accountants are responsible for the preparation and timely filing of individual and fiduciary income tax returns and tax estimates of moderate to high complexity, including the gathering and analysis of all information needed to complete these returns and to determine the lowest lawful tax burden for the client. The ability to maintain positive contact with clients, advisors, trustees, and client officers and to observe the confidentiality of client and firm matters are critical to the role. Professionalism, organization and attention to detail are required skills.


Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Prepare and timely file federal and state individual and fiduciary income tax returns of moderate to high complexity as assigned, including quarterly federal and state tax estimates as required.
  • Prepare and timely file required tax returns, estimates or withholding as applicable for other tax return types as needed, including partnerships, corporations, and foundations.
  • Prepare and timely file federal gift tax returns of simple to moderate complexity and assist with gift tax planning projections.
  • Analyze trust documents to determine the tax return requirements for related accounts.
  • Communicate with federal and state tax authorities to respond to letters and notices received. Prepare amended returns and claims for refund as needed.
  • Reviews tax returns and other work product prepared by other tax accountants and by outsource providers and prepare notes regarding the accuracy of the work product reviewed.
  • Keep up to date with tax law changes through readings and attending webinars and tax seminars. Research tax concepts, as needed, and be able to advise clients, trustees, and other advisers.
  • Assist with maintaining Tax Services policies and procedures and provide support to other income tax accountants, as needed.
  • Perform federal and state income tax projections of moderate to high complexity to assist clients, trustees and financial advisers in strategic tax planning.
  • Serve as mentor to income tax associates and provide consultative and interpretative support to other tax accountants and advisers on tax and technical support matters.

 

Essential Capabilities:

  • Ability to independently manage the end-to-end preparation and review of 150+ tax returns.
  • Ability to oversee all aspects of the tax return process from initiation through completion, ensuring timely coordination, preparation, review, and filing during peak tax season.
  • Interact effectively with all levels of personnel, including management, advisors, attorneys, client service officers, and support staff.
  • Ability to interact professionally and effectively with clients, both internal and external.
  • Ability to be a proactive, self-starter, who pays attention to details and has the ability to follow through.
  • Work efficiently under tight deadlines and handle multiple, detailed tasks.
  • Respond promptly and positively to shifting demands and opportunities.
  • Work well within a teamwork/collaborative style and environment.


Education, Experience and Qualifications 

  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent in a business-related discipline is required, with a degree in accounting preferred. CPA and/or MS in Taxation is a plus.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible tax related work experience in order to gain the expertise needed to prepare and sign tax returns for individuals and trusts is required. Direct individual or fiduciary tax experience in a law firm, accounting firm, or bank trust department preferred.
  • Ability to demonstrate integrity in personal and fiduciary matters and handle confidential data is essential.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks, complete them under time constraints, and be flexible and proactive with assignments.
  • Knowledge of tax software systems, including CCH Axcess Tax, CCH Workflow/XCM, CCH Axcess Scan, Holistiplan, Salesforce, eMoney, etc.
  • A positive attitude and excellent interpersonal skills required in order to communicate, follow instructions effectively, and be part of an interactive team.
  • Familiarity with standard office practices and Microsoft office products including Outlook, Word and Excel is required. Ability to learn new software applications as introduced.


Compensation 

The anticipated base salary range for this position is $110,000 - $140,000. Final base compensation will be carefully determined based on several factors including relevant knowledge, skillset, and experience. Additionally, this role may be eligible for other forms of compensation and benefits, such as discretionary bonus, health, dental, and vision plans, and employer 401(k) contributions.
