Job Description:

Job Description

We are hiring a Carbonate Reservoir Geologist position within our Sedimentology & Stratigraphy (SedStrat) Specialist Team. The team provides deep technical expertise that is applied globally across bp’s Exploration and Reservoir Development portfolio.

This is an individual contributor role that requires a deep understanding of carbonate depositional systems and reservoir architecture, and broad experience of carbonate reservoir production characteristics. The successful candidate must have specifically carbonate sedimentology and reservoir quality expertise with a history of successfully applying and integrating that knowledge in a variety of subsurface projects to create value. In addition, the successful candidate will be able to demonstrate strong project management abilities, as well as excellent communication and influencing skills. This role is suitable for experienced carbonate sedimentologists with a history of business delivery.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Primary accountability would be as one of bp’s recognized carbonate reservoir subject matter experts .

In addition to supporting carbonate-focused projects, the successful candidate must lead subsurface teams across bp to deliver sedimentological and reservoir characterization studies in a range of diverse carbonate settings globally.

  • Integrate diverse subsurface static and dynamic data sets working closely with engineers and other subsurface disciplines to identify value-generating opportunities
  • Assist in framing and prioritizing technical service work.
  • Supervise and verify sedimentological, reservoir quality, and integrated geology studies undertaken in the SedStrat specialist team, and as appropriate, those undertaken in assets.
  • Provide input into management presentations and reports.
  • Provide carbonate sedimentology and reservoir quality coaching and mentoring in areas of developed expertise across bp.
  • Develop and maintain deep carbonate sedimentological and diagenetic skills across a range of reservoir types through reading, attending consortia workshops and external conferences.
  • Quickly develop a strong technical reputation as a bp subject matter expert, and where appropriate, publish high quality innovative technical work internally and externally e.g. at industry-wide conferences and formal manuscript publications.
  • Assist/lead teaching and development of bp courses with significant carbonate geological content.
  • Act as a focal point for carbonate-focused JIPs/consortia, ensuring that maximum value is gained from them.

EDUCATION:

Minimum requirement MSc Geology degree level; preferably PhD level or equivalent experience.

EXPERIENCE AND JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • A deep understanding of carbonate sedimentary rocks across a range of depositional settings (e.g. platform, ramp, reefal, slope, basinal, lacustrine). In particular, the successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a strong understanding of carbonate facies analysis, depositional architecture, diagenesis, reservoir quality evolution, high-resolution sequence stratigraphy, and stratigraphic frameworks.
  • An ability to scope and co-ordinate reservoir description and characterization projects, some involving external contractors, to deliver high-quality products that can be practically applied to subsurface problems.
  • Experience in carbonate reservoir management/production, and at least one of the following: exploration, appraisal, early field development.
  • An ability to describe carbonate core and outcrops independently, to a high standard, integrating sedimentology, textures, diagenesis, fractures, and reservoir quality observations.
  • Ability to organize and lead geologic integrated field trips and core workshops, particularly focused on carbonate systems and reservoir analogues.
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal). Experienced with presenting to senior management to influence both vertically and horizontally in the organization.
  • Ability to context switch while supporting more than one team at pace with the ability to pragmatically right-scope products.
  • Managing carbonate analogues databases and contributing to reservoir quality benchmarking efforts.

AN ABILITY TO:

  • Generate multiple depositional, diagenetic, and stratigraphic scenarios
  • Use static and dynamic fluid data to test, improve and rank those models
  • Describe subsurface uncertainty and risks and their impact on profile and resource delivery
  • Skillfully correlate wireline logs, integrate reservoir data (e.g. core, seismic and image logs), dynamic data (sat logs, PLTs, PBU etc) and generate multiple geological models.
  • A good understanding of, and ability to integrate with, other subsurface subject areas (Petrophysics, Geophysics, Reservoir Engineering)

DESIRABLE:

  • A minimum of 10 years’ broad geological experience, ideally gained through work assignments in different areas and basins, dominantly within carbonate systems.
  • Experience working in multi-discipline/multi-function project teams and ability to influence others to provide quality inputs to ensure quality team delivery.
  • Ability to organize and lead cross-team workshops and meetings.
