About this Role

Substation Technician 3 at Irby Construction Company shall possess a minimum of two (2) years of experience in a substation construction type atmosphere. This is not limited to 1 year of vocational schooling. Substation, Commercial, or Industrial construction experience is a plus. Substation Technician 3 must be self-motivators and willing to grow their knowledge base as well as role in the company. The individual will learn to possess all the skills required for assignment from the foreman for complete substation construction installations.  Such an employee shall be able to learn in depth knowledge of all applicable OSHA codes and standards.

 

What You'll Do

  • Typical Substation construction from Greenfield to Remodels. This includes:
    • Trenching for ground grid & conduits
    • Backfilling and compacting
    • Foundation drilling, digging and installation
    • Lifting placing and setting structural steel
    • Lifting placing and installing insulators and busswork
    • Installing battery banks
    • Lifting, placing & installing substation equipment such as breakers, metering, transformers, arrestors etc.
    • Moving, pulling & installation of control cable to medium voltage cable
    • Placing finish stone and smoothing out the yard

Job Specific Duties

  • Ability to learn from peers on substation construction techniques.
  • Ability to grow as a person and a want and need to grow your career.
  • Being able to assist the crews in whatever the daily tasks are.
  • Knowledge of electrical, below grade or concrete foundation trade a plus.
  • High Voltage Substation construction knowledge or experience a plus.
  • Accountable for quality of work to ensure that it is being performed according to specifications.

 

What You'll Bring

  • Must have at least two (2) years of substation construction experience
  • Adheres to all Company Safety and Health Policies
  • Must have a valid driver’s license. CDL class A is preferred but not required.
  • Must be willing to stay out of town. Typical work weeks are 4-10 hour shifts or 5-10 hour shifts. Available to travel as the project requires.
  • Willing to work over-time and be able to work extended periods of time.
  • May work in storm restoration operations to rebuild and/or repair damaged power systems.
  • May attend training classes or seminars to gather knowledge of new processes, safety regulations and/or refresher training.
  • Walking and working across uneven terrain.
  • Climbing on and off large trucks and equipment.
  • Must be able to work outside 100% of the time. We work in inclement weather that includes heat, cold, rain and possible snow.
  • Able to lift in excess 50 pounds on a daily basis.
  • Willing to work off the ground in man baskets. Normal working heights are 20’-60’ with the possibility of working at 120’ heights.
  • Must be able to work around energized systems.
  • Must have reliable transportation
