Job Summary

The Product Design Engineer is responsible for applying engineering principles, design practices, and analytical methods to develop optimized mechanical design solutions for Cummins products. This role supports product development activities from concept through validation, ensuring designs meet customer, performance, reliability, durability, manufacturing, assembly, and serviceability requirements. The position collaborates closely with cross-functional teams to resolve product issues, drive design improvements, and support successful execution of product development programs.

Key Responsibilities

Product Design & Development

  • Develop and refine mechanical design concepts for components, subsystems, and systems using engineering fundamentals and design best practices.
  • Create and maintain 3D CAD models, detailed drawings, engineering specifications, and Bills of Materials (BOMs) using Creo.
  • Interpret customer and business requirements and translate them into robust design solutions.
  • Support concept selection, design optimization, and engineering change management activities.

Design Analysis & Validation

  • Conduct design reviews and support design validation activities.
  • Apply GD&T, tolerance stack, DFMEA, and other engineering tools to improve product quality and reliability.
  • Support product function modeling, simulation, and analysis using engineering tools such as Creo Simulate or ANSYS Workbench and other computational methods.
  • Evaluate alternative design concepts and recommend optimal solutions based on performance, cost, weight, durability, manufacturability, and customer requirements.
  • Participate in failure analysis and root cause investigations to resolve product-related issues.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with manufacturing, quality, purchasing, validation, and supplier teams throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Gather inputs from stakeholders and communicate design intent through structured design reviews and technical documentation.
  • Coordinate engineering activities and support execution of product development plans.
  • Support implementation of engineering changes and ensure configuration management compliance.

Product Problem Solving & Continuous Improvement

  • Investigate design-related issues from development programs, testing, manufacturing, and field operations.
  • Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance product quality, reliability, and customer satisfaction.
  • Contribute to process improvements and engineering best practices.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related STEM field.
  • Knowledge of mechanical design principles, engineering drawings, and product development processes.

Skills

  • Strong proficiency in Creo (3D modeling and drafting).
  • Strong engineering fundamentals and mechanical design knowledge.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and create engineering drawings and technical specifications.
  • Knowledge of GD&T, tolerance stack, DFMEA, and engineering design processes.
  • Familiarity with simulation and analysis tools such as Creo Simulate or ANSYS Workbench is preferred.
  • Understanding of product development lifecycle, design reviews, and change management processes.
  • Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Effective communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience or knowledge of casting design and manufacturing processes.
  • Knowledge of automotive systems and component design.
  • Exposure to product validation, reliability testing, and engineering analysis.
  • Understanding of configuration management and engineering change control processes.

Experience

  • Early-career engineering professional with about 2 to 4 years experience.
  • Experience using Creo and engineering drawing standards is highly desirable.
  • Exposure to cross-functional engineering projects and product development environments will be an advantage.
