Hybrid – This role requires the employee to be onsite at least three days a week. The primary work location may be at the General Motors Global Technical Center in Warren, MI. 

Role Overview  

As a Safety Process Engineer – AMR Certification, you will play a critical role in supporting the internal GM Safety approval process for third-party automation equipment while also leading third-party certification activities for internally developed autonomous robotics products. This includes developing and managing certification schedules, coordinating directly with certification bodies and testing organizations, planning and executing audit and witness test activities, and ensuring certification evidence aligns with GM safety process expectations, required certification standards, and internal approval requirements before deployment.  

This role is ideal for an engineer who is highly organized, detail-oriented, and experienced in working across suppliers, internal stakeholders, and external certification bodies and testing laboratories. You will lead an internally developed product certification activity including owning schedules and timelines, managing certification-body interactions, coordinating third-party validation and audit activities, and organizing documentation and audit evidence. Additionally, you will ensure supplier-provided automation equipment and solutions align with GM safety processes and industry safety standards. You will work closely with manufacturing, system safety, engineering, product, program, and supplier teams to support safe approval and deployment of internally developed autonomation products and third-party automation solutions within GM environments. 

What You’ll Do 

  • Support the internal GM safety approval process for third-party automation equipment, including autonomous mobile robotics and other supplier-provided systems 

  • Validate that supplier-provided certification evidence, compliance documentation, and technical materials meet GM safety process expectations and approval needs 

  • Lead coordination of appropriate certification bodies, testing partners, and validation based on equipment type, deployment environment, and applicable standards  

  • Develop and maintain third-party certification schedules, milestones, readiness checkpoints, and timing risk management plans aligned with product and deployment timelines 

  • Serve as the primary technical interface with certification bodies and testing organizations, including coordination of scope, information requests, audit logistics, witness testing, and certification issue resolution 

  • Plan, coordinate, and run certification test and audit activities, including pre-audit readiness reviews, audit test execution, evidence capture, discrepancy tracking, and corrective action follow-up 

  • Coordinate internal validation process with vendor supplied equipment either in a lab or manufacturing environment based on deployment requirements  

  • Organize technical documentation, audit materials, and test evidence needed to support GM safety reviews  

  • Partner with engineering and supplier teams to identify certification gaps, documentation deficiencies, and open compliance issues, and drive them to closure 

  • Track certification findings, audit outcomes, deviations, and corrective actions across active supplier programs 

  • Assess the impact of vendor product updates, software revisions, hardware changes, and feature modifications on ongoing certification status and re-certification requirements 

  • Maintain clear status reporting on safety approval readiness, certification progress, timing risks, and unresolved compliance issues 

  • Lead material audits, witness testing, audit test execution, and technical review activities required for third-party certification and internal GM approval decisions  

  • Help establish repeatable processes, templates, and records management practices to improve how GM evaluates and approves third-party automation equipment 

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications) 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or a related technical field 

  • Professional experience in certification, compliance, validation, quality, product safety, system safety, supplier quality, or a closely related discipline 

  • 3+ years of experience supporting or coordinating third-party certification, technical compliance, audit readiness, supplier validation, or regulatory approval activities for electromechanical systems, industrial equipment, robotics platforms, or similar products 

  • Experience planning and executing certification and audit test activities, including readiness reviews, witness testing, evidence collection, and corrective action tracking 

  • Experience leading interactions with external certification bodies, testing organizations, suppliers, or compliance partners, including schedule coordination, audit planning, and technical issue resolution 

  • Experience organizing and reviewing structured technical documentation, evidence packages, test records, and audit materials 

  • Strong project coordination skills, including the ability to manage multiple timelines, open issues, and stakeholder inputs simultaneously 

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to assess compliance gaps, evaluate change impacts, and identify certification risks 

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively across internal engineering teams, manufacturing organizations, suppliers, and external partners 

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications) 

  • Experience supporting internal safety approval processes for supplier-provided equipment in manufacturing, industrial automation, or robotics environments 

  • Familiarity with GM safety processes, internal approval expectations, or launch/deployment readiness activities 

  • Familiarity with standards such as ISO 13849, IEC 61508, ISO 12100, ISO 3691-4, ANSI B56.5, UL, or related frameworks 

  • Experience leading or supporting third-party technical audits, compliance reviews, witness testing, certification assessments, or factory/field audit activities 

  • Experience developing certification plans or audit schedules and coordinating directly with certification bodies through test execution, findings closure, and final report approval 

  • Experience evaluating the certification impact of vendor hardware changes, software updates, or feature modifications 

  • Experience working in cross-functional product development or manufacturing environments with strong documentation and traceability expectations 

  • Familiarity with autonomous mobile robotics technologies, industrial controls, or third-party automation deployment environments
