Director, Commercial Deposits and Client (Lifecycle) Fraud Strategy

What is the Opportunity?
We are seeking a highly motivated fraud leader to help build and operationalize modern fraud controls for commercial banking focused on cheque transactions (deposits/issuance) and throughout the client’s relationship lifecycle with the bank, you will own the strategy and support the design, execution, and optimization of fraud controls across 2 major fraud-prone commercial banking core activities
Commercial clients’ deposit-taking & cheque processes across various channels (ie Branch, Armoured Car, Night Deposit, Remote Deposit Capture, Mobile capture etc…) Commercial Clients’ lifecycle – onboarding/account opening, and on-going changes to client’s risk profile throughout their relationship with RBC CB.
This is an opportunity to work on high-impact fraud transformation initiatives involving digital trust, behavioral analytics, authentication modernization, and cross-channel fraud detection. You will balance fraud loss, client experience, operational cost, and risk appetite while serving as a trusted advisor on large-scale transformation initiatives.
What will you do?
- Lead the fraud strategy execution across commercial onboarding, deposits, cheque ecosystems, and client lifecycle activities.
- Champion to develop/ optimize fraud controls related to onboarding abuse, shell entities, cheque fraud, deposit anomalies, and client misuse scenarios.
- Analyze fraud events, onboarding trends, client behaviors, and operational metrics to identify emerging threats and optimization opportunities.
- Support fraud mitigation initiatives involving first-party fraud, mule businesses, synthetic entities, and lifecycle abuse.
- Partner with Commercial Channels Fraud and Payments Fraud teams to support integrated enterprise fraud intelligence and cross-domain detection capabilities.
- Support implementation of fraud technologies, telemetry integrations, analytics platforms, and control modernization initiatives.
- Prepare fraud reporting, analytics, executive updates, and control performance insights.
- Coordinate with onboarding, operations, trade, product, risk, fraud, cybersecurity, and technology teams on fraud mitigation initiatives.
- Provide senior management with timely updates on fraud loss savings and risk performance.
- Conduct data analysis to support business cases for technology or FTE investment.
- Work collaboratively in cross-functional squads to optimize the risk balance while managing prioritized backlogs.
- Research and assess best-in-class fraud mitigation strategies and technologies.
- Lead day-to-day engagement with fraud technology vendors and partners, supporting proof-of-concepts, capability assessments, implementation activities, and ongoing performance management.
Must-haves:
- 10+ years’ experience in fraud, cybersecurity or risk management, with at least 5 years in a fraud-specific role; demonstrated success leading fraud modernization or enterprise-scale implementations (not advisory)
- Product or Operational experitise in cheques, onboarding/KYC, deposits, financial crimes, commercial banking risk, or operational risk environments.
- Direct understanding of commercial banking payment flows and how unauthorized channel access enables payment fraud (ACH, wires, trade finance)
- Direct experience with at least four commercial channels: internet banking, mobile banking, APIs, host-to-host connectivity, call centers, or branch servicing
- Familiarity with commercial client administration models and fraud monitoring tools, analytics platforms, and real-time decisioning systems
- Proven track record managing multiple concurrent initiatives and delivering results within fast-paced transformation environments.
- Track record building fraud risk governance structures, defining KPIs, and establishing frameworks spanning operations, compliance, and technology
- Executive-level communication skills; advanced data analysis with proficiency in Excel (pivot tables, statistical functions) and PowerPoint for presenting findings to senior leadership
- Demonstrated understanding of regulatory expectations for fraud risk management and how commercial fraud threats evolve with technology adoption
- Ability to drive strategic initiatives to completion within 12-24 month timeframes across resistant stakeholder environments
- Track record in managing medium to large size vendors specializing banking technologies
Nice-to-have:
- Experience with behavioral analytics, authentication technologies, or fraud monitoring platforms
- Knowledge of commercial payment ecosystems and payment fraud typologies
- Knowledge of commercial banking payment rails and emerging payment ecosystems
- Familiarity with fraud AI/ML models, graph analytics, or real-time decisioning platforms
- Red-team exercises, fraud simulations, or cyber-fraud fusion experience
- Exposure to AI/ML fraud detection or fraud intelligence programs
- Professional certifications (CFE, CAMS, CISSP, or equivalent)
- Project management or consulting experience
- Vendor Management Experience
