The U.S. Consumer Services and Membership Digital Experiences Technology team (USCDT) brings together foundational strategic technology capabilities in digital experience engineering (Mobile and Web), marketing and advertising technology, enterprise communications, travel and lifestyle, and dining technology. It employs a ground-breaking focus with development responsibilities for customer-facing capabilities that deepen and expand digital engagement, as well as core technical capabilities that cut across business lines and customer segments.
We’re looking for an experienced Sr. Software Engineer l to work on the mobile payments solutions that will be used by tens of millions of cardholders around the world. We want someone who is super creative and enjoys solving tough problems. You should be able to come up with brilliant solutions that no one else can, and be obsessive about UI/UX design and user experience.
You’ll be part of the Digital Payments Engineering team whose mandate is to develop new products and platforms for American Express customers. Payments Engineering’s aim is to build interactive experiences at all touch points of a consumer's journey whether before, at, or after the time of purchase. The products will range from new payment vehicles and partnerships with other payment entities to interactive web experiences.

In this role, you'll design and develop modern APIs and backend services that enable seamless digital payment experiences across mobile, web, and partner ecosystems. You'll collaborate with cross-functional teams to solve complex technical challenges, influence architectural decisions, and deliver high-quality software that drives meaningful customer impact.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will:
- Design, develop, and maintain secure, scalable, and high-performance APIs and backend services that power digital payment experiences.
- Build and enhance payment capabilities supporting mobile, web, and partner platforms, with a strong focus on reliability, performance, and security.
- Collaborate with Product Managers, UX designers, architects, and engineering teams to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
- Drive technical design discussions, contribute to architecture decisions, and promote engineering best practices across the team.
- Champion software quality through clean code, automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, code reviews, and observability.
- Optimize application performance, scalability, and resilience while ensuring operational excellence in production environments.
- Mentor and support fellow engineers by sharing technical expertise and fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation.
- Stay informed of emerging technologies and industry trends, identifying opportunities to improve platforms, processes, and customer experiences.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Strong experience designing and developing RESTful APIs and distributed backend services using modern programming languages such as Java, Kotlin, or similar.
- Experience building scalable, cloud-native applications using microservices architecture.
- Solid understanding of software engineering fundamentals, including object-oriented design, data structures, algorithms, and design patterns.
- Experience with Agile development methodologies, CI/CD pipelines, and DevOps practices.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to navigate complex technical challenges.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with experience working across cross-functional teams.
- Familiarity with event-driven architectures, messaging platforms (Kafka, JMS), and modern observability tools.
- Experience mentoring engineers and contributing to technical leadership within engineering teams.
