Director, Supply Chain Operations
About the Role
Primary is looking for a Director of Supply Chain Operations to lead our logistics strategy and manage our inbound freight operations end-to-end—from purchase order release all the way through to domestic warehouse delivery.
In this role, you will act as both a strategic planner and an operational builder. You’ll protect the business against global supply chain volatility, scale our wholesale infrastructure, and mentor a high-performing team. You'll help make sure product lands on time, at the right cost, and with the visibility our internal and external partners need to plan and scale with confidence. This is a fully remote role (the Primary team operates on US East Coast Time).
What You'll Do
Drive Inbound Freight Strategy: Own end-to-end inbound logistics. Negotiate with and manage freight forwarders, carriers, and customs brokers using clear performance metrics to optimize transit times, service levels, and landed costs.
Mitigate Global Supply Chain Risk: Serve as our expert on global supply chain trends. Anticipate port conditions, tariff changes, capacity constraints, and geopolitical shifts, building practical risk-mitigation strategies to prevent business disruption.
Scale Wholesale Expansion: Lead the operational readiness for wholesale growth—overseeing overseas vendor preparation, EDI/systems development, and process alignment to onboard new wholesale partners smoothly.
Optimize Data & KPI Visibility: Establish vendor scorecards, internal reporting, and monthly cross-functional reviews that provide clear ongoing visibility into freight performance, cost metrics, and compliance risk.
Guide Vendor Compliance: Own vendor routing and packing guidelines, partnering across Operations to enforce compliance and manage reporting or chargeback processes when necessary.
Budget & Financial Planning: Partner with the VP of Operations to set departmental goals, forecast inbound freight costs, and manage operational P&L planning.
Lead & Mentor the Team: Direct and develop the Supply Chain Operations team (including managing our Senior Supply Chain Manager), nurturing talent, removing manual process friction, and building modern operational capacity.
What You'll Bring
Proven Supply Chain Leadership: Extensive background directing inbound freight strategy, carrier/forwarder negotiations, and vendor operations from purchase order to final delivery.
Wholesale Operational Expertise: Experience preparing vendors, integrating EDI systems, and building operational frameworks to launch and scale wholesale partnerships.
Global Compliance & Risk Savvy: Deep understanding of macro logistics trends, duty/tariff risk, and direct experience working with U.S. Customs and Border Protection on compliance and clearance issues.
Data-Driven & Systems Mindset: Skilled at establishing operational KPIs, building cost forecasting models, and streamlining manual reporting. Experience with NetSuite or modern AI productivity tools (like Claude) is a plus.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: A natural communicator who builds strong working partnerships across Sourcing, Merchandising, Planning, and external vendors.
What Success Looks Like
Within your first 6 to 12 months, we anticipate that you will likely:
Streamline Internal Workflows: Audit current process flows, transit tracking, and communication channels to eliminate manual overhead and speed up data delivery.
Elevate Partner Accountability: Establish forwarder and vendor scorecards and launch regular business reviews to measurably reduce transit times and landed costs.
Build Predictive Cost Models: Implement an accurate forecasting model for inbound freight costs to support company-wide P&L planning.
Drive Cross-Functional Alignment: Form tight working partnerships across Sourcing, Merchandising, and Planning to ensure seamless operational visibility.
Set the 2027 Roadmap: Co-create the department’s long-term operational strategy and annual goals alongside the VP of Operations.
