Job Purpose
- Develops strategies, capabilities and initiatives to enhance and improve laboratory services performance over a multi-year horizon, and is responsible for laboratory operational, clinical, and education processes. Accountable for financial, service, and quality metrics for Methodist Health System laboratory services. Laboratory Directors have Solid line reporting to the AVP Laboratory Services and dotted line to a local VP (as designated by Hospital President).

Work Experience:
- 10+ years of laboratory experience with at least 5 years of progressive Laboratory leadership experience
- Strong experience in laboratory management including personnel management, operations, clinical services, business development, and regulatory compliance.

- Highly data driven and analytical with a healthy sense of intellectual curiosity

Job Roles:
- Develop laboratory services strategy that supports and meets corporate strategy, corporate performance objectives and internal and external customer expectations.
- Review and provide input on MHS hospital annual laboratory budgets and plans.
- Evaluate laboratory technology and promote fiscal and clinical standardization across the health system.
- Promote standardization of laboratory ordering and usage. With the guidance of Medical Directors, develop order sets, protocols, algorithms, and informational guidance which facilitate safe and effective testing results. Reviews and updates, in conjunction with other laboratory leaders, all Laboratory policy and procedure manuals.
- Responsible for being a successful steward of the MHS’s financial affairs as it pertains to laboratory services. Responsible for securing the best possible price while maintaining quality and patient outcomes on all purchase decisions
- Serve as the subject matter expert of MHS to key Lab partners (GPO, key suppliers and other external partners), collaborating with supplier executive teams to identify, pursue and structure relationships that enhance value creation capability.
- Review laboratory related decisions for all areas within MHS despite reporting relationships to ensure that guidelines, policies and best practices are in place.
- Responsible for laboratory related billing and reimbursement to minimize rejections and maximize revenue.
- Consistently engage Hospital A/VPs of Operations, CNOs, Lab Directors, CMO, Epic Team, Pathologists and Clinical Integration/Service Line leadership to establish and deliver shared vision.
- Keeps abreast of current developments in the field of laboratory by reading journals and participating in professional activities and associations as appropriate, which involves improving the performance, efficiency, and legal requirements of all MHS laboratory departments.
- Communicate with stakeholders by presenting data driven information, answering questions and keeping stakeholders informed about laboratory progress and objectives.
- Lead laboratory initiatives by overseeing their execution and ensuring they are completed on time and within budget.
- Collaborate with pathologists to foster open lines of communication leading to cost-effective, timely and quality clinical results.
- Assure hospital laboratory operates in compliance with state and federal laws and regulations and with external regulatory and accrediting agencies (CAP)
- Coaches and develops the skills and talents of hospital-based Lab employees with emphasis on the Pathology Supervisory Team. Directs the hiring, training and discharge of the Lab department staff.
- Ensures with the Lab Medical Director an acceptable quality level for all testing results in hospital lab.
- Prepares lab department budgets. Manages lab resources to comply with budget and addresses any variances to budget.
- Provides opportunities for continuing education for lab staff.
