The Position

Lead Engineer

Roche Digital Technology (RDT) is where innovation meets purpose. As a global team at the heart of Roche, we are a community of business-minded technologists committed to help shape tomorrow’s digital future of healthcare. Our mission is to power Roche through cutting-edge digital technologies, harnessing the potential of artificial intelligence, data, and scalable tech innovations. Driven by purpose and passion, we’re building a future where digital is a core strength across all of Roche, enabling smarter ways of working, unlocking human potential, and driving breakthroughs that truly matter for millions of patients around the world.

At Roche, we offer a hybrid work model that combines flexibility with in-person collaboration. For now, we require our employees to be in our offices on average two days per week. The specific office days may vary depending on business needs, such as workshops, conferences, town halls, team meetings, and other collaborative events.

This role is based within our Diagnostics R&D division, operating at the intersection of scientific computing and production AI, where instrument pipelines generate terabytes of data daily alongside GxP-validated ML models. We are looking for a Tech Lead who can operate across the full stack—building platform infrastructure, contributing to applied research, and designing frameworks for the end-to-end lifecycle of ML models. Joining this team means leading technical innovation in an environment that deeply values continuous learning, technical excellence, and life-saving patient impact.

The Opportunity:

  • Platform Development & Engineering: Lead the design, development, and enhancement of the MLOps capabilities. Contribute to the engineering of microservices, API integrations, and platform-level infrastructure to support robust model lifecycles and seamless user experiences.

  • Ownership: Partner closely with business and engineering teams to understand their needs, define a runway, and drive medium to large-scale initiatives.

  • Model Lifecycle Management: Lead the deployment and maintenance of ML models, ensuring their continuous effectiveness throughout their lifecycle. Design and build pipelines with embedded versioning, experiment tracking, and immutable, regulatory-compliant audit trails for all hyperparameters, data versions, and environment configurations.

  • Pipeline Development & Production Deployment: Develop and manage automated ML pipelines using platforms like Kubeflow and Amazon SageMaker to streamline model training and evaluation. Deploy models online for inference using serving frameworks such as Seldon Core and SageMaker Endpoints.

  • Collaboration, Monitoring & Observability: Partner with Data Scientists, Data Engineers, and Architecture teams to operationalize model development (feature engineering, model registry, feature stores). Implement and maintain observability solutions (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry) to track model performance, platform drift, and system health.

  • Compliance, Governance & CI/CD Integration: Ensure all platform components and ML activities adhere to Roche’s strict data classification, security, and privacy directives, including proper Role-Based Access Control (RBAC). Utilize GitLab CI/CD and JFrog Artifactory to automate deployment processes, ensuring secure and reliable delivery of both platform features and ML applications.

  • Regulatory Compliance, Governance & Validation (CSV): Ensure all agentic behaviors, data handling, and model training patterns strictly adhere to highly regulated frameworks (GxP, GDPR, HIPAA, and ALCOA+ principles, EU AI Act). Own the technical execution of Computer Software Validation activities for AI/ML pipelines; author, execute, and maintain Installation Qualification (IQ), Operational Qualification (OQ), and Performance Qualification (PQ) protocols. Build and maintain Traceability Matrices and navigate strict technical change control workflows for all production model updates.

  • Collaboration, Continuous Learning & Leadership: Engage with data scientists, platform architects, business stakeholders, and product leads to translate use cases into AI-enabled solutions. Convey complex concepts clearly to non-technical audiences. Lead the technical direction, mentoring junior engineers, making architectural decisions independently, representing the team in cross-functional design reviews, and evaluating emerging AI frameworks, workflow automation tools, and agent technologies.

Who You Are:

  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Machine Learning, Bioinformatics, or a related field (Required).

  • Professional Experience & Software Skills: Minimum 5+ years of relevant experience. Proficient in software development using languages such as C, C++, Python, Go/Rust, ideally with experience in data pipelines and enterprise systems (Required).

  • MLOps Frameworks, Data and Pipeline Skills: Proven experience with ML orchestration tools such as Kubeflow, Amazon SageMaker. Proficiency in managing feature stores, model registries, and data pipelines. Ability to develop models using frameworks such as TensorFlow and PyTorch (Required).

  • Technical Skills & Infrastructure: Strong hands-on experience with modern large language models in real-world applications. Strong foundations in system engineering and data structures. Advanced proficiency in Python and PyTorch and familiarity with JAX or TensorFlow for domain-specific scientific models. Experience containerizing workloads (Docker) and orchestrating distributed compute (Kubernetes) across cloud (AWS) and on-prem high-performance computing (HPC) setups with a strong DevOps mindset. Ability to design observability for interconnected services, improve monitoring, and solve complex cross-service issues while profiling performance (Required).

  • Nice to Have: Hands-on experience with LLM orchestration frameworks (LangChain, LlamaIndex), agentic workflows, and vector databases (Preferred).

  • Behaviors, Competencies & Leadership Qualities: Systems thinker who prioritizes automation, data integrity, and building scalable concepts over one-off tasks. Demonstrated experience in independently identifying opportunities, conducting in-depth explorations, and owning scope from inception to deployment. Exceptional leadership and mentorship skills, specifically in mentoring senior and junior engineers and promoting code quality and architectural consistency through critical design reviews. Strong communication and negotiation skills, capable of effectively communicating complex technical information and building mutually beneficial partnerships across stakeholder ecosystems (Required).

What You Get:

  • Salary range: 19,075.00 – 35,425.00 PLN gross / month (equivalent to 228,900.00 – 425,100.00 PLN gross / year) based on an employment contract (UoP).

  • Annual bonus: Up to 20% target bonus based on performance and achievements.

  • Dedicated training budget (training, certifications, conferences, diversified career paths, etc.).

  • Recharge Fridays (2 Fridays off per quarter available).

  • Take Time Program (up to 3 months of leave to use for any purpose).

  • Vacation subsidy available.

  • Flex Location (possibility to perform our work from different places in the world for a certain period of time).

  • Take Time for Charity (additional paid leave of maximum 2 weeks to engage in the charity action of your choice).

  • Private healthcare (LuxMed packages), group life insurance (UNUM), and MultiSport.

  • Stock share purchase additions.

  • Yearly sales of company laptops and cars, and many more!
