Job Description


The Rackspace Technology Legal Department is seeking a Director, Legal – Litigation and Employment to join our team, based in San Antonio, TX. This role owns litigation and employment matters across the US and internationally, manages a small team, and coordinates with outside counsel across core and non-core geographies. We're looking for a candidate with strong commercial litigation and employment experience from a reputable private practice or in-house environment, ideally with a technology industry background.


Key Responsibilities

  • Managing all aspects of commercial and employment litigation matters in the US and internationally, including case strategy, fact-finding and analysis, and retaining and managing outside counsel
  • Investigating and responding to claims, demand letters, administrative complaints, and other related inquiries
  • Overseeing high value collection matters, directing recovery strategy, related negotiation and arbitration proceedings with outside counsel across multiple jurisdictions
  • Advising on bankruptcy related matters
  • Identifying and assessing legal risks and mitigation measures and advising business and leadership on same
  • Developing, implementing, and managing employment law compliance initiatives as directed by business leadership
  • Leading on US and international employment-related projects, including assuming ownership of APAC and international employment matters currently supported on a temporary basis by the International Sales legal team, transitioning to this role upon hire
  • Managing employment litigation and other contentious matters with the support of outside counsel
  • Leading and overseeing internal workplace investigations, including allegations of harassment, discrimination, retaliation, and other misconduct
  • Providing legal support for reductions in force, including planning, risk assessment, and documentation
  • Drafting and maintaining employee handbooks, HR policies, and related training programs, including anti-harassment and manager training
  • Drafting and negotiating restrictive covenant agreements and separation/severance agreements
  • Advising on wage and hour compliance and worker classification issues
  • Owning the company's legal hold process and document retention policy for litigation and employment matters
  • Coordinating with risk management/insurance on litigation matters, including leveraging applicable coverage
  • Advising on the use of contractors across multiple jurisdictions
  • Assisting with global mobility matters
  • Advising on day-to-day employment law and employee relations matters
  • Directing development of employment law guidance and creation of jurisdiction-specific templates and policies to support Company’s global expansion initiatives
  • Handling a range of cross-border employment law issues
  • Working with the compensation and benefits team, including on sales compensation and commission issues
  • Instructing and managing outside counsel, including coordination with regional panel counsel (e.g., EMEA employment panel) in non-core geographies
  • Managing law enforcement requests as well as criminal and civil subpoenas
  • Hiring, managing, and developing an Associate Counsel supporting litigation and employment matters
  • Directly managing the Sr. Paralegal and Legal Administrator II roles supporting this team
  • Operating autonomously with little supervision while functioning as a strong team player across the broader Legal organization

Qualifications


We are looking for someone flexible and motivated to deliver outcomes, with the ability to adapt and be proactive in an ever-changing environment. Ideally you would have:

  • JD
  • Active U.S. Bar Admission
  • 7+ years of experience
  • Multiple years of experience at a major law firm and/or in-house legal department of an internationally operating, complex corporation
  • Demonstrated experience managing and developing junior legal talent
  • Working knowledge of instructing and coordinating outside counsel across jurisdictions, including non-core geographies supported by panel counsel
  • Highly effective communicator, written and oral
  • True team player, able to work cross-functionally in a complex organization and available to cover other team members as needed
  • Results-driven, with proven experience leading strategic projects and working independently
  • Excellent written and spoken English skills


Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several geographic markets. The compensation range for this position ranges from $185,709.00/year in our lowest geographic market up to 272,373.20 USD/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The compensation package may also include incentive compensation opportunities in the form of annual bonus or incentives, equity awards and an Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP).
