Cybersecurity Specialist

Position Summary

Fairwinds Technologies is seeking an experienced Cybersecurity Specialist to support a military aircraft modernization program focused on airborne communications, avionics integration, mission systems, and ground support systems.

The selected candidate will serve as the cybersecurity lead supporting the design, integration, testing, certification, and sustainment of secure aircraft and mission systems. This position requires expertise in DoD cybersecurity processes, Risk Management Framework (RMF), Authority to Operate (ATO) activities, cybersecurity engineering, vulnerability management, and secure systems integration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead cybersecurity activities throughout the system lifecycle.
  • Implement and maintain DoD Risk Management Framework (RMF) processes.
  • Develop and maintain RMF packages, accreditation documentation, POA&Ms, and supporting cybersecurity artifacts.
  • Support ATO, Interim Authorization to Test (IATT), and related approval activities.
  • Conduct cybersecurity assessments, compliance reviews, and gap analyses against government security controls.
  • Identify vulnerabilities, assess risks, and develop mitigation strategies. 
  • Integrate cybersecurity requirements into aircraft, avionics, mission systems, and ground system architectures.
  • Evaluate hardware, software, firmware, and network designs for cybersecurity impacts.
  • Collaborate with systems, software, avionics, and engineering teams to ensure secure interfaces and data flows.
  • Support secure implementation of mission computing, communications, and radio systems.
  • Support Program Protection Plan (PPP) implementation.
  • Assist with identification and protection of Critical Program Information (CPI) and Critical Components (CC).
  • Support Supply Chain Risk Management (SCRM) efforts, including counterfeit component risk evaluation and supplier security assessments.
  • Support cybersecurity audits, compliance reviews, and government assessments. 
  • Support TEMPEST compliance activities and control plan development.
  • Evaluate security requirements related to grounding, shielding, wiring, and emanations protection.
  • Participate in laboratory and aircraft security reviews and testing events. 
  • Support cybersecurity testing during laboratory, ground, and flight test events.
  • Review test procedures and validate implementation of security controls.
  • Develop and maintain cybersecurity documentation, System Security Plans, interface documentation, and engineering records.
  • Support configuration management and cybersecurity impact assessments for engineering changes.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Cybersecurity, Information Assurance, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline.
  • 5+ years of cybersecurity experience supporting DoD, aerospace, defense, or government programs.
  • Active CISSP (preferred), CASP+, or CISM certification required.


Experience

  • 9+ years of experience in aerospace, defense, military aviation, or aircraft modernization programs.
  • Experience implementing DoD Risk Management Framework (RMF).
  • Experience supporting ATO, IATT, or system accreditation efforts.
  • Experience developing cybersecurity documentation and compliance artifacts.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity engineering principles for embedded, avionics, or mission-critical systems.
  • Experience performing vulnerability assessments and cybersecurity risk analysis.
  • Familiarity with NIST security controls and RMF processes.
  • Excellent communication and technical writing skills.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, problem-solving, and customer relationship management skills.
  • Experience with AWACS, ISR, C2, airborne communications, or large aircraft mission systems, preferred.


Compensation - Salary

Base pay may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, location and experience. Additional incentives may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
