Position Summary:

The Disaster Recovery Coordination Manager is responsible for developing, maintaining, testing, and coordinating the organization's disaster recovery (DR) program to ensure critical systems, applications, and data can be restored within defined recovery objectives following a disruption. Working at the intersection of IT, business continuity, and risk management, this role owns the DR lifecycle end to end — from recovery planning and exercise design through live incident coordination and post-event improvement. The manager partners with infrastructure, application, security, and business teams to ensure recovery capabilities keep pace with the organization's evolving technology landscape and risk profile.

Key Responsibilities

Program Development & Governance

  • Build and maintain the enterprise disaster recovery strategy, policies, standards, and runbooks aligned to organizational risk appetite and regulatory requirements.
  • Partner with BCP to maintain an accurate inventory of critical applications, infrastructure, dependencies, and recovery configurations.
  • Ensure the DR program aligns with the broader business continuity management system and integrates with crisis management and incident response.

Planning & Documentation

  • Develop, document, and regularly update disaster recovery plans, recovery procedures, and technical runbooks for critical systems and sites.
  • Define recovery sequencing and dependency mapping to ensure systems are restored in the correct order.
  • Maintain up-to-date contact trees, escalation paths, and vendor/third-party recovery agreements.

Testing & Exercising

  • Plan, schedule, and lead DR tests and exercises (tabletop, walkthrough, simulation, and full failover) to validate recovery capabilities.
  • Define test scope, success criteria, and scenarios; document results, gaps, and corrective actions.
  • Track remediation of findings to closure and verify improvements in subsequent exercises.

Incident Coordination & Response

  • Serve as the central coordinator during DR activations, directing recovery efforts across technical teams and communicating status to leadership and stakeholders.
  • Maintain readiness to invoke recovery procedures, including out-of-hours and on-call response.
  • Lead post-incident reviews, capture lessons learned and drive continuous improvement.

Stakeholder Engagement & Reporting

  • Partner with IT infrastructure, applications, cloud, security, and business unit leaders to embed recovery requirements into design and change processes.
  • Manage relationships with recovery vendors, colocation/cloud providers, and managed service partners.
  • Report on DR program health, test outcomes, risks, and compliance status to senior management and audit/risk committees.
  • Support internal and external audits and regulatory examinations related to recovery and resilience.

Training & Awareness

  • Develop and deliver DR training and awareness for recovery teams and stakeholders.
  • Ensure recovery teams understand their roles and can execute procedures under pressure.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology, Computer Science, Risk Management, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in disaster recovery, business continuity, IT operations, or infrastructure, including 2+ years in a coordination or management capacity.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing DR plans and leading recovery tests/exercises.
  • Working knowledge of recovery concepts and metrics (RTO, RPO, BIA, failover/failback, backup and replication).
  • Solid understanding of IT infrastructure: servers, storage, networking, databases, virtualization, and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, or GCP).
  • Strong coordination skills with the ability to remain calm and direct cross-functional teams during high-pressure incidents.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to brief technical teams and executive stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional certification such as CBCP, MBCP, CBCI, or DRI International credentials.
  • Familiarity with relevant standards and frameworks: ISO 22301, NIST SP 800-34, ITIL.
  • Experience in a regulated industry (e.g., financial services, healthcare, government) and with related compliance requirements.
  • Experience with DR orchestration/automation tooling, backup platforms, and cloud-native recovery services.
  • Project management experience or certification (e.g., PMP).
