Process Engineer, Lead/Staff

Oakland, CAFullTimePosted Jul 29, 2026

About Remedy

Remedy is a startup committed to addressing the planet’s enormous challenge of environmentally contaminated land. Our mission is to bring contaminated sites back online by turning idle, polluted land into space that can be built on again. We do this by building massively scalable, automated systems that combine novel chemistry, hardware, and software.

Position Summary

Remedy's process takes contaminated soil, vapor, and water from the field through processing, with rigorous analytical verification along the way, both in Remedy's own lab and third-party labs. We are hiring a Process Engineer (Lead or Staff level) to own this chain end to end: from sample intake to fully analyzed results.

This is a hands-on role for someone who is equally comfortable with hardware and firmware as they are thinking through software and data requirements. You will map every step of the current process, understand how long each step takes, identify what can be removed or simplified, and define what should be automated to improve QA/QC, throughput, and scale. You don't need to be a software engineer, but you do need to understand how software can meaningfully improve a process and be able to define requirements clearly for the engineers who build it.

This role is calibrated for a strong individual contributor today, with a potential path to building and leading a process engineering team as Remedy scales.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process Mapping & Optimization

    • Own every step of the sample lifecycle, from soil/vapor/water collection through prep, processing, analysis, and data delivery in Remedy's Lab and third-party labs

    • Quantify cycle time, throughput, and failure/rework rates at each step; identify bottlenecks and non-value-add steps that can be removed or simplified

    • Define and prioritize automation opportunities that improve QA/QC, throughput, and scalability

    • Work directly with the analytical chemistry team to identify process improvements and tradeoffs.

  • Lab Automation Engineering

    • Evaluate, select, and integrate lab automation equipment (liquid handlers, robotic arms, automated samplers) to reduce manual touchpoints across the sample pipeline

    • Partner with hardware/firmware specialists (internal or contracted) to scope custom integrations where off-the-shelf automation doesn't fit

    • Work hands-on in the lab to prototype, test, and validate process changes

    • Bring process rigor from synthetic biology, pharmaceutical, clinical, or other large-scale lab operations to environmental sample processing

  • Software & Data Requirements

    • Define requirements for software that tracks samples, chain of custody, and process/QA data end to end

    • Partner with the software engineering team to translate process needs into system requirements, workflows, and data models

    • Identify where software can replace manual steps, reduce error, and enable remote monitoring or control of processing and lab equipment

    • Use AI tools across your own workflow including AI coding tools to prototype scripts, dashboards, small automations, and AI-assisted analysis to speed up process and data work

  • Scale & Continuous Improvement

    • Build the foundation for 24/7 operation of both core processing and the Remedy Lab, including automation, staffing, and monitoring needs

    • Establish and continuously improve QA/QC procedures across the full sample pipeline

    • Bring process discipline from high-volume manufacturing, environmental, or lab-scale operations to Remedy

Required Qualifications

  • Significant hands-on experience (Lead/Staff level) in process engineering, manufacturing engineering, or lab operations, ideally in environmental, analytical chemistry, or high-volume manufacturing settings

  • Demonstrated experience across hardware and firmware. Able to build, integrate, and troubleshoot physical systems and instrumentation, not just specify them

  • Experience mapping, measuring, and optimizing complex, multi-step processes, including cycle time analysis, throughput modeling, and bottleneck identification

  • Track record of taking a manual or semi-manual process and scaling it toward automation

  • Comfortable defining software and data requirements and partnering closely with engineers to implement them, without needing to be a software developer

  • Strong QA/QC instincts, with experience implementing or improving quality systems in a regulated or high-rigor environment

Nice-to-Have

  • Experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) or similar sample-tracking software

  • Background with analytical instrumentation (GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, ICP-OES, XRF, etc.) or environmental sample chain of custody

  • Experience scaling a process or facility from prototype/pilot to high-volume, continuous (24/7) operation

  • Experience coordinating with third-party labs, sample logistics, or environmental regulatory requirements (EPA, ASTM, ISO)

  • Experience as an early process or manufacturing hire at a startup

  • People management or team-building experience

Skills

  • Strong process thinking, able to see the full pipeline and how changes in one step ripple through the rest

  • Comfortable moving between hands-on hardware/firmware work and higher-level process and software requirements

  • Data-driven approach to process improvement

  • Clear written and verbal communication for cross-functional collaboration across lab, engineering, and software

  • Comfortable operating with high autonomy in a fast-moving, early-stage environment

Team

  • This position reports to the Head of Engineering. This role is expected to evolve. As Remedy scales core processing and lab operations toward 24/7 throughput, you may take on hiring and management responsibilities, building and leading a process engineering team. That path is optional and based on interest and performance. Immediate success in this role is defined by mapping, improving, and beginning to automate Remedy's sample pipeline end to end.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive salary, commensurate with experience and level

  • Meaningful equity in an early-stage company

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance

  • 401(k) with company matching
