Hardware Engineer LocationSan Francisco, CAEmployment TypeFull timeLocation TypeHybridDepartmentEngineeringJoin the team bringing advanced autonomy to the built worldAt Bedrock, we’re moving AI out of the lab and into the real world. Our team is composed of industry veterans who helped launch Waymo, scaled Segment to a $3.2B acquisition, and grew Uber Freight to $5B in revenue. Today, we’re deploying autonomous systems on heavy construction machinery across the country, accelerating project schedules of billion-dollar infrastructure projects and improving safety on job sites. Backed by $350M in funding, we’re working quickly to close the gap between America's surging demand for housing, data centers, manufacturing hubs, and the construction industry's growing labor shortage. This is where algorithms meet steel-toed boots. You’ll collaborate with construction veterans and world-class engineers to solve physical-world problems that simulations can’t touch. If you're ready to apply cutting-edge technology to solve meaningful problems alongside a talented team—we'd love to have you join us.We’re growing our sizable fleet of retrofitted autonomous construction machines and we’re looking for a talented hardware engineer to help define system architecture, test and integrate modules into the system, and generally provide coverage on critical HW workstreams. You will work alongside senior engineers responsible for designing these systems, and be responsible for delivering highly robust and capable autonomous HW systems to the field.Key Qualifications:Strong foundational knowledge in traditional HW engineering subjects such as electrical design, testing, and deployment of hardware systems in rugged outdoor environmentsExperience leading large HW development programs from ideation through proto, EVT, DVT, and production stagesExperience with some or all of the following:High performance/power edge compute including multi-CPU platforms with significant GPU resourcesCommon autonomous sensing technologies including lidar (spinning, flash), camera (visible, SWIR, NIR, etc…), radar, GNSS, and IMUsPackaging and integration strategies for high performance HW systems in rugged environments including high shock/vibe, wide temp ranges, IP, and solar loadingHigh speed signaling including GSML, multi gigabit ethernet, RFProficiency in compiled (C/C++/Rust), shell (linux bash), or runtime (Python) languages with ability to prototype and debug software components of HW systems as well as run tests, data collection, analysis, and reportingDescription and ResponsibilitiesThe candidate will be responsible for designing, characterizing, integrating, and validating bedrock autonomy hardware.Help define system and component level HW architecture for autonomous machinesEstablish and lead relationships and programs with external vendors to deliver critical components and systems for our autonomous HW platformsWork with safety team to establish requirements and performance metrics for components and systemsWrite reusable, high quality, sensor data analysis and test automation software (Python and/or C++/C/Rust)Education and Experience6+ years of professional relevant industry experience as hardware engineer or related technical roleBachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics or related technical fieldStrong fundamentals in HW engineeringUnderstanding and knowledge of physical processes by which a sensor operatesHands on experience with characterization of autonomy sensors like lidar, radar, and camerasWays to Stand Out From the FieldDeep experience in any of these areas:Camera and optics design and performanceCamera imaging pipeline including sensor options, ISP tuning, compression, and storageAperture degradation, HW components for sensor cleaning including sprayers, air puffers, wipers, ultrasonics, and other cleaning methodsHigh performance embedded compute, in particular Nvidia Jetson lineupHigh and low speed communication...
