Job Purpose

The Software & System Test Engineer role in EA2 is responsible for delivering defined engineering assignments with guidance, while expanding the breadth of your technical knowledge and starting to deepen your expertise in your specific technology area. The Software & System Test Engineer is also expected to assign priorities and execute a plan to avoid being late on deliverables. They should be working closely with Technical Leadership and create a decision matrix for solving a problem or trouble shoot with multiple options as well as having strong teamwork mentality. Together with the guidance of Technical Expert, the Software & System Test Engineer should be able to recognize potential cascading impact created by a change either in their part towards other systems, or other systems change impact toward their part, and be able to proactively communicate to avoid issues.

They guarantee the integrity of the electrical control system for their system(s). As a member of the Electrical & Electronics Architecture (EEA) Division, the Software & System Test Engineer is expected to design our vehicles’ electrical and electronics infrastructure, integrate and package the software from all divisions, and ensure protection from cyber threats and attacks. The Software & System Test Engineer I takes ownership when it comes to developing an EEA function / feature / component cluster on the vehicle.

Key Accountabilities

  • Project and team management: Breaking down project concept details into required development activities and deciding the overall ECU development plan with Technical Leadership’s guidance and support, correlating technical project details with key stakeholders and negotiating the schedule for deliverables. Informing technical leadership of project status often is expected.
  • Engineering specification design for Body/Powertrain ECU applications, including electrical circuit hardware and software in tools such as MATLAB Simulink or MS VISIO.  Setting the direction to create design concepts before converting to requirements and functional specifications, then conducting design reviews with technical leadership.
  • Engineering troubleshooting, root cause analysis and solution design: Working hands-on in prototype or mass production level vehicles to identify responsible system(s) functional issues and deciding the steps required for resolution.
  • Testing and verification of ECU specifications related to hardware and software: Performing testing in prototype or mass production level vehicles related to electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) or verification of technical change points to ensure proper electrical functional performance, quality and reliability.  Accountable to create test result reports and conduct verification reviews with technical leadership.  
  • Improvement and innovation: Identify shortcomings and suggest improvements to existing processes, systems and procedures to increase efficiency and other key metrics.
  • Documentation: Management of multiple concurrent developments with the ability to recognize problems in advance and navigate the unknown, with the experience to see the next step and create a decision matrix for solving a problem or troubleshoot with multiple options.
    Report concern(s) items to Technical Leadership and identify/propose C/Ms for resolution after conducting thorough root cause analysis.
  • Work with suppliers to coordinate requirements, schedule activities, and address issues in a timely manner.

Qualifications, Experience, and Skills

  • BSEE or BSME degree, or equivalent experience.
  • 0 to 2 years of closely related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Effective communication skills (written, verbal and presentation).
  • Ability to cultivate and manage relationships of varying levels in/out of the organization, including supplier.
  • Ability to acclimate to new environments, negotiate through unknowns and meet new people.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and productively.
  • Solid quantitative/analytical problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Computer skills, such as PowerPoint, Excel, MS Project, Word, CANalyzer etc.
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently.
  • Acute attention to detail.
  • Strong collaboration skill(s).

Working Conditions

  • Commitment to work necessary work hours to achieve all responsibilities, including overtime and operating periodically at early and late day hours.
  • Must be able to lift 20 lbs.
  • Kneeling, bending, sitting, standing, and maneuvering inside of vehicles is required.
  • Travel is sometimes required - ~5% (International travel may be requested).
  • This is a hands-on position; associate is expected to work on the actual vehicle with tools.  Candidate can expect to spend a portion of their time working in the lab – confirming their systems on bench, on the car, in thermal chambers, and on HILS system Office work is split between on-site (80%) and remote (20% Work from Home).
  • Vehicle-level testing is conducted either on-site in a specified lab or offsite at a supplier/contracted facility.
