Compute Control Plane Architect

United StatesFull-time$170k–$355kPosted Jul 27, 2026

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) is building the next generation of hyperscale cloud services. This organization sits within the Oracle CTO Office and is focused on solving some of the industry’s most complex long-term challenges in cloud infrastructure.

Operating as a forward-looking research and architecture organization, the team is responsible for defining the next generation of core cloud platforms that will power OCI’s future growth. Rather than making incremental improvements, this organization rethinks foundational architectural assumptions and drives high-impact initiatives that shape the evolution of OCI’s infrastructure at hyperscale.

Architects within this organization function as highly autonomous, single-threaded technical leaders responsible for defining entirely new architectural domains, influencing engineering organizations without formal authority, and assembling cross-functional tiger teams to solve highly ambiguous platform-level challenges. This is an environment designed for engineers who embrace change, thrive in ambiguity, enjoy greenfield development, and are energized by solving some of the most challenging distributed systems problems in the cloud industry.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure is seeking a Compute Control Plane Architect to define the future architecture of OCI’s Compute Control and Management Plane.

This role will lead the redesign of one of OCI’s foundational cloud services to improve scalability, resiliency, performance, and operational efficiency. Working within the Chief Technical Architect Office, you will partner directly with senior engineering leadership to establish the long-term architectural direction for OCI Compute and influence the next generation of hyperscale cloud infrastructure.

What You’ll Do

  • Define the long-term architectural vision for OCI’s Compute Control and Management Plane.

  • Lead the redesign of core control plane services to improve scalability, resiliency, performance, and operational efficiency.

  • Architect highly available distributed systems that operate reliably at hyperscale.

  • Establish architectural patterns for control plane services, orchestration, platform management, and operational safety.

  • Drive technical strategy across Compute, Product, Security, SRE, and partner engineering organizations.

  • Lead complex, cross-functional initiatives spanning multiple engineering teams.

  • Influence technical direction through architectural leadership rather than organizational authority.

  • Mentor senior engineers and technical leaders while raising architectural rigor across OCI.

  • Partner with executive engineering leadership to shape OCI’s long-term Compute platform strategy.

Ideal Candidate Profile

Successful candidates are technical leaders who thrive in highly ambiguous environments and enjoy defining the future of large-scale cloud platforms.

You are likely to be successful in this role if you:

  • Have extensive experience architecting and operating large-scale distributed systems.

  • Enjoy solving complex systems problems that require long-term architectural thinking.

  • Demonstrate exceptional systems design skills and sound architectural judgment.

  • Influence engineering organizations through technical credibility rather than positional authority.

  • Have successfully led large, cross-functional technical initiatives spanning multiple organizations.

  • Thrive in greenfield environments where requirements evolve and ambiguity is expected.

  • Balance innovation with operational excellence, reliability, and long-term maintainability.

  • Communicate effectively with senior engineers, architects, and executive leadership.

Technical Background

Candidates should have demonstrated experience across all of the following areas:

  • Designing and operating compute platforms, cloud infrastructure, and distributed control plane architectures.

  • Building large-scale distributed systems, including service orchestration, resource scheduling, and platform management.

  • Developing cloud infrastructure services, platform APIs, and operational control plane capabilities.

  • Driving scalability, resiliency, high availability, fault tolerance, and performance optimization for hyperscale cloud platforms.

  • Architecting foundational cloud infrastructure within a hyperscaler or other large-scale cloud provider.
