Software Development Engineer
Job Description:
At Remitly, we believe everyone deserves the freedom to access, move, and manage their money wherever life takes them. Since 2011, we've tirelessly delivered on our promise to customers sending money globally, providing secure, simple, and reliable ways to manage their money, ensuring true peace of mind. Whether it's supporting loved ones back home, growing a business across continents, or pursuing new opportunities abroad, we're not just here to move money— we're here to move our global customers forward. We're looking for builders, reimaginers, and global thinkers who want to work at the intersection of technology, trust, and transformation. If that's you and you're ready to do the most meaningful work of your career—we invite you to join over 2,800 passionate Remitlians worldwide who are united by our vision to transform lives with trusted financial services that transcend borders.
About the Role:
Remitly built its business on remittances - helping millions of people move money across borders. Now we are going broader: user wallets, stored balances, and a growing set of financial products that let customers do more than send a single transfer. Every one of those products rests on the same deceptively simple question: how much does this customer actually have, right now, in this account? Answering that correctly, at scale and under real banking regulation, is the foundation the next generation of Remitly is built on. That is what our team owns.
We are building UFA (User Financial Accounts) - Remitly's new, general-purpose platform. It is the source of truth for customer balances and the foundation for wallets, safeguarded fiat accounts, credit and lending products, promotions, and whatever the business dreams up next.
This is a rare moment to join. We are not iterating on a mature system; we are laying the foundations and taking them live. The UK is our first regulated market - the license is granted and the go-live clock is already running - with the EU and UAE close behind. You will help build the ledger primitives, the correctness and consistency guarantees, and the relevant integrations that everything else is built on, then watch them go into production in market after market.
As an Software Development Engineer on the team you will build and deliver features across the platform. You will take on well-scoped problems in areas like atomic money movement, ledger consistency, safeguarding, and idempotency under failure, contribute to technical design, and work with teammates and partner teams to get your work into production. You will report to a Kraków-based Engineering Manager and work alongside a senior, domain-deep team you can grow with.
You Will:
- Build and help design the core services and APIs at the heart of UFA - the primitives that record, validate, and move customer money with strict correctness guarantees.
- Work on hard distributed-systems problems: consistency, atomicity across multi-step financial operations, idempotency, and graceful behavior under partial failure, where a bug is measured in real money.
- Help take new regulated markets live. Turn licensing and safeguarding requirements into concrete platform capabilities, starting with the UK and moving into the EU and UAE.
- Deliver your work from technical design through production readiness, as part of larger cross-team initiatives.
- Contribute to design decisions for your area: weigh trade-offs and keep an eye on maintainability, reliability, and cost.
- Collaborate with partner teams and, where relevant, with external banking and payment partners.
- Take part in design and code reviews, and help raise the quality bar across the team.
- Partner with Product and Operations to clarify requirements, surface risk early, and deliver on realistic plans.
You Have:
- 3+ years of professional software engineering experience.
- Proficiency in a backend language such as Java, Kotlin, or Go, and experience building scalable, distributed systems.
- Experience running production systems in the cloud (AWS or similar), including participation in on-call rotations for high-availability services.
- Solid grounding in relational and non-relational databases and the data-modeling trade-offs that show up at scale.
- An instinct for correctness and operational risk, and the judgment to know when it matters most.
- Experience communicating updates and resolutions to customers and other partners and the ability to collaborate across time zones (our partner teams sit in Seattle). B2+ English.
- BS in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
- Comfort using AI tools across the development lifecycle.
Nice to have:
- Payments, fintech, or banking-platform experience - especially anything ledger, wallet, or money-movement adjacent.
- Experience with regulated or compliance-sensitive systems (safeguarding, PCI scope, financial reporting).
- Experience building multi-tenant platform services or shared infrastructure that supports many different workloads.
- Experience working directly with external banking partners, card networks, or payment processors.
- A feel for observability and operational excellence in systems where downtime and inconsistency have real financial cost.
