Director, Enterprise Data Privacy Strategy and Ethics

TORONTO, CanadaFull-timePosted Jul 31, 2026

Job Description

WHAT IS THE OPPORTUNITY?

Ethics and privacy are not just about risks and controls, they are the foundation of customer trust, innovation and monetization. The Director, Data Privacy and Ethics will transform the conversation on data usage from a compliance function into a strategic growth lever, where every ethical decision expands RBC’s innovation "safe perimeter," deepens customer loyalty, and unlocks monetizable trust assets. By collaborating closely with our technology, business and Functions partners, the Director will drive thought leadership and actionable work in that space, leveraging AML, Finance transformation and other major enterprise initiatives as windows of opportunity to develop the bank in that space. Through all those efforts, the director will spearhead the creation and adoption of an enterprise Data Privacy strategy. To ensure the right data is sourced for the right use case, the director will work closely with internal partners to develop trust frameworks to embed across the bank’s processes.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

  • Develop trust frameworks with internal partners including Privacy, Information Security, Platforms and LOBs: develop gating processes and sourcing approaches to ensure the bank sources the right data for the right use cases.
  • Define a strategy around data privacy and data valuation, and push the thinking on reframing limitations as opportunities. Define acceptable use frameworks based on value creation (e.g., enhanced customer insights, ecosystem partnerships) rather than risk avoidance. Code acceptable use into usage frameworks leveraging concepts like medallion ratings and other acceptable industry practices.
  • Explore the possibilities around monetizing trust: develop models where ethical practices directly fuel data-sharing willingness with business partners (e.g., transparent consent UX → richer analytics → personalized services), turning trust into a measurable business asset.
  • Help RBC enable PETs at scale: Partner with Lumina, CISO and Privacy to deploy privacy-enhancing technologies as foundational infrastructure, enabling secure cross-LOB collaboration, new product development and expanding the “safe perimeter” to experimentation by removing barriers to sharing. Work with technology partners to explore deployment of technologies such as homomorphic encryption, SMPC, and other mechanisms enabling safer privacy-driven sharing.
  • Embed ethical use as part of product design and risk management processes, to leverage data more strategically.
  • Governance-as-enabler: Work with risk management groups to evolve risk-assessment protocols to proactively identify value opportunities rather than just threats: ethical open-banking partnerships, integrated LOB data sharing to drive business, etc.
  • Align RBC internal stakeholders with emerging regulations as market differentiators: by working towards being ready, we avoid future disruptions to our business: align RBC on accountabilities related to Privacy.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO SUCCEED?

 Must have:

  • Ability to reframe complex technical and business problems into frameworks that work across multiple areas, along with storytelling skills to explain this to various audiences.
  • Strong partnership and influence skills to work effectively with Technology, Business, Risk, and other stakeholders to develop and implement change.
  • Some understanding of privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs), data valuation, and ethical frameworks to drive actionable solutions.
  • Proactive awareness of emerging regulations and the ability to position RBC as a leader in ethical data practices across the geographies it operates in.

Nice-to-have

  • Experience in a highly federated environment, where change is effected through influence
  • Ability to facilitate between and influence key decision makers
  • Strategic thinker with excellent interpersonal skills to work across functions and businesses
  • CIPP certification delivered by IAPP

  • Work in a dynamic, collaborative, progressive, and high-performing team
