Medical Assistant-Family Healthcare-Full Time-Day-MSQ

The Medical Assistant is an individual who functions in a support role to Clinical Nurse Manager by providing direct patient care and related activities as assigned. As a medical assistant one must be able to multi-task while at the same time focus on details of the proper identification of patients to ensure their safety, label all specimens correctly in accordance with the hospital policy and procedures established by the laboratory. Supports the mission, vision and philosophy of the institution.

  • Assist the primary care provider and specialists with the physical examination of the patients as needed.
  • Escort patient to the examination room, instruct patients on the preparation for examination. Assist in the disrobing and dressing after examination is completed if necessary to ensure patient safety and comfort.
  • Responsible for the accurate recording of the patient vital signs; heart rate, blood pressure, respiration and weight of patient.
  • Order and restock supplies in all patient examination rooms. Rotate and check all the examination rooms for expiration of supplies. Maintain the condition of the examination rooms between patient visits for cleanliness as well as necessary supplies to ensure JCAHO and DOH compliance.
  • Perform venipuncture, including preparing necessary supplies for blood drawing, verifying patient identification and observing blood drawing procedures and protocol at all times.
  • Make appropriate copies of EKG tracing if needed. Distribute original tracings and copies according to established hospital policy.
  • Instruct patient on the collection of laboratory specimens , i.e. urinalysis, cultures, 24 hour specimen collection. Be responsible for the labeling of these specimens.
  • Assist in the maintenance and care of departmental equipment for preventative maintenance.
  • Maintain electrocardiogram and laboratory supplies, re-order and re-stock areas as needed
  • Assist in the maintenance of the medical records.
  • Prepare and maintain relevant department records and statistics. Coordinate referrals to specialists. Coordinate medical clearance for all pre-surgical patients. Maintain a monthly log of surgical patients. Maintain a monthly log for pap smears and mammography.
  • Assist with preparation of lab slips, specialty appointment and other patient paperwork if required.
  • Maintain established departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality improvement program, safety standards and infection control procedures.
  • Daily check if the refrigerator temperature log.
  • Daily check that specimens are picked up in accordance with courier service schedule. Check at end of shift that all specimens were picked up.
  • Assures and maintains a safe, uncluttered clean environment for patients, staff and others.
  • Maintains attendance, punctuality and dress code in accordance with departmental policies.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and adherence to Hospital and Departmental Policies and Procedures.
  • Perform all other duties required.
  • Education: High school Diploma. Completion of a Medical Assistant certificate program from an approved school or two years of experience working as a medical assistant.   
  • Experience: Two years of experience working as a medical assistant.
  • Certification: Completion of a Medical Assistant certificate program from an approved school or equivalent.  Medical Assistant Certification is preferred. Heartsaver/BLS Certification from American Heart Association

The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides salary ranges that comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $28.46 - $30.56 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and operational need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
