Senior Software Engineering - Device Data Capture
Job Description
Vacancy Status:
This posting is not for an existing vacancy within the organization and is open to new applications.
AI Disclosure:
As part of the application process, Artificial Intelligence will be used in the hiring process for this role
Work Arrangement: Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Markham or Oshawa office three times per week, at minimum.
The Role
The DDC / RDM platform is the backend system of record for vehicle configuration, campaign delivery, and remote device management at scale — a set of Spring Boot services (with supporting data and eventing infrastructure) that manage device attributes, group targeting, config distribution, and OTA campaigns across a global, multi-region fleet. We're in the middle of a significant modernization push: retiring legacy API versions, hardening authorization across every service, and redesigning our service-to-service network architecture.
What You'll Do (Responsibilities)
Design, build, and operate backend services (Java/Spring Boot) that power device configuration, campaign management, and data-plane connectivity for millions of vehicles.
Lead authorization and security hardening across our API surface, and drive the retirement of legacy (v1–v3) endpoints in favor of a consistent, versioned API strategy.
Own architectural decisions for cross-service communication, event-driven workflows, and observability as the platform expands into new regions.
Reduce structural tech debt in high-traffic services (dependency upgrades, framework migrations, network/security architecture) without slowing feature delivery.
Help evolve our engineering workflows by integrating agentic, model-assisted developer tooling (e.g., automated code-review agents, coding assistants wired into our repos via MCP clients) into day-to-day backend development — improving review quality and cutting routine toil.
Mentor other engineers on service ownership, backend design standards, and operational rigor.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
5+ years building and operating production backend services, ideally in Java/Spring Boot (or comparable JVM/server-side stacks).
Strong grasp of distributed systems fundamentals: API design and versioning, service-to-service authorization/security, event-driven architecture, and data plane scalability.
Experience leading technical direction on a multi-service platform — not just writing code, but making and documenting architectural trade-offs.
Comfort working with modern, agent-assisted engineering tooling (automated review bots, coding assistants, MCP-based integrations) as part of a normal development workflow.
A track record of shipping tech-debt and security work under real feature-delivery pressure, not just in isolation.
What Can Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):
Experience with automotive, IoT, or other large-fleet device-management platforms.
Familiarity with multi-region/OTA delivery systems.
Prior experience standing up or governing agent-based/automated tooling across a multi-repo organization.
Compensation:
The salary range for this role is $115,000 to $164,600. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
