As a Hitch Service Technician, you'll play a key role in helping customers safely tow their trailers, campers, boats, and more. You'll install trailer hitches and wiring, inspect equipment, perform basic maintenance, and provide outstanding customer service. This is an active, hands-on position that combines technical work with customer interaction. No previous hitch installation experience is required—we provide paid training and certifications to help you succeed.

Hitch Service Technician Responsibilities

  • Install trailer hitches, towing accessories, and vehicle wiring to U-Haul standards.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot trailer wiring and lighting issues.
  • Explain towing packages and recommend the best solution based on customer needs.
  • Safely operate hand and power tools while following all safety procedures.
  • Perform quality inspections to ensure installations meet U-Haul standards.
  • Assist customers with hitch demonstrations and safe towing practices.
  • Cross-train as a Customer Service Representative to assist with rentals, returns, and customer service as needed.
  • Move and connect U-Haul trucks and trailers.
  • Inspect, clean, and maintain rental equipment to ensure it is safe and ready for customers.
  • Fill propane cylinders after completing company-paid certification.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development through U-Haul University.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid driver's license with the ability to maintain a good driving record.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Mechanical aptitude and an interest in learning automotive installation skills.
  • Experience using hand and power tools is preferred but not required.
  • Strong problem-solving and customer service skills.
  • Comfortable working both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays, as business needs require.

Work Environment

This is a physically active position that combines technical work with customer service. Team members spend time both inside the service area and outdoors performing hitch installations, inspecting equipment, assisting customers, and preparing rental equipment. Work involves using hand and power tools, operating around vehicles, and following all required safety procedures, including the use of appropriate personal protective equipment.


Physical Demands

The position requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, and working with tools throughout the day. Team members must be able to lift and move at least 50 pounds, with or without assistance. The role also involves working in a variety of weather conditions and safely moving trucks, trailers, and other equipment around the property.
