POSITION SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work in the operation of light, medium and heavy equipment and light to heavy-duty trucks. Perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled duties related to deactivation, decommissioning, demolition, remediation and construction.
EDUCATION/TRAINING:
· High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED) preferred. Two to five years experience as an Equipment Operator.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
· Considerable knowledge of equipment operations and construction and maintenance procedures.
· Must possess a working knowledge of grades and blueprints.
· Knowledge of heavy equipment operation and equipment safety.
· Knowledge of workplace safety requirements and procedures.
SKILLS & ABILITIES:
· Skill in operation of assigned equipment to include motorized vehicles and equipment, including excavator, shears, grapple, backhoe, bulldozer, roller/compactor, loader, dump truck pickup truck, utility truck, Ability to interpret plans, drawings, and written instructions and specifications.
· Ability to read and understand work orders and organize work with minimum supervision.
· Ability to work effectively and amicably with other people.
· Ability to hear and speak, to communicate in-person and over a telephone and/or radio.
· Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
· Ability to work independently or in a team situation.
· Possess basic problem-solving and math skills.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
· Must possess a valid State Driver’s License.
· Ability to pass a pre-employment background check.
· Ability to pass HAZWOPER physical and wear a respirator if required for project.
· Ability to pass pre-employment and random drug screens.
· Must be available for regular standby assignments and work scheduled off-hours and emergency overtime as required.
· Must be available for assignment to projects that require overnight travel.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
· Operate excavators, shears, grapples, skidsteers, loaders and other miscellaneous heavy equipment in a safe and controlled manner.
· May operate heavy equipment on a training basis, example, grader, track loader.
· Perform required manual labor as required to support the overall project requirements; check and service assigned equipment.
· Perform routine maintenance and emergency repairs, report complex mechanical problems for shop repairs.
· May assist in loading and unloading of trucks, laying of pipe, using air tools and
· Jackhammers and other hand tools related to job.
· Train less skilled employees in operation and care of equipment.
MENTAL & COGNITIVE DEMANDS:
· Communication – ability to read and interpret maintenance and repair manuals; ability to write routine work orders; ability to communicate clearly and succinctly on a basic and technical level.
· Skills – basic heavy equipment operation. Basic skill operating a variety of equipment including hand and power tools.
· Reasoning – ability to solve practical problems; ability to interpret and understand a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
· Must possess strength, stamina and mobility to perform heavy physical work outdoors in all weather conditions and with exposure to potentially hazardous conditions.
· Required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.
· Required to stand, walk and talk or hear. Regularly required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and smell.
· Must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
· Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Perform any or all duties normally assigned to less skilled employees; perform other related duties as required.
JOB DIMENSIONS:
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
· Reports directly to the Site Superintendent, as well as the Project Manager.
INTERFACE REQUIRED:
· Interfaces with management personnel, co-workers, subcontractors and customer.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
· This position requires regularly working in outside weather conditions. Regularly work near moving mechanical parts and frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. Occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and may require hearing protection
