Job Summary

The Engineering Laboratory Technician supports product validation and instrumentation engineering activities by preparing, configuring, operating, and maintaining laboratory test systems, test rigs, and instrumentation. This role is responsible for executing routine testing activities, installing test articles, collecting and documenting test data, maintaining laboratory equipment, and ensuring compliance with quality and safety standards. Working closely with engineers, suppliers, and cross-functional teams, the technician contributes to product development, continuous improvement, and reliable test execution for Cummins products.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare, configure, and set up test rigs in accordance with approved engineering procedures and test plans.
  • Install Devices Under Test (DUTs), sensors, hoses, fixtures, instrumentation, and supporting hardware while ensuring proper alignment and secure installation.
  • Assemble and install test articles, fixtures, harnesses, and laboratory equipment required for functional and durability testing.
  • Connect, verify, and troubleshoot electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and data acquisition systems prior to test execution.
  • Perform pre-test inspections including visual checks, leak testing, continuity verification, equipment calibration, and functional validation.
  • Execute routine laboratory testing and operate test rigs under the guidance of engineering personnel while monitoring test parameters throughout the test cycle.
  • Install, calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain laboratory instrumentation including gauges, transducers, cooling systems, fuel systems, smoke meters, heat exchangers, and related measurement equipment.
  • Operate data acquisition systems and accurately record test observations, readings, abnormalities, and equipment status in accordance with laboratory procedures.
  • Prepare clear and accurate test documentation, maintenance records, calibration reports, equipment checklists, and test logs.
  • Support preventive maintenance activities, calibration schedules, cleaning, inspection, and basic repair of laboratory equipment and test systems.
  • Identify basic electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, or hydraulic issues and coordinate corrective actions with engineering teams.
  • Maintain inventory of laboratory consumables, including hoses, fittings, sensors, fixtures, fasteners, AdBlue, and other testing materials.
  • Interpret electrical wiring diagrams, test procedures, and engineering documentation to support test execution.
  • Interface effectively with engineers, suppliers, internal customers, and other functional teams to support testing activities.
  • Participate in laboratory audits, quality initiatives, corrective actions, and continuous improvement projects.
  • Recommend improvements to test fixtures, laboratory processes, equipment utilization, and test setup efficiency.
  • Maintain compliance with Cummins Health, Safety, Environmental (HSE), laboratory safety standards, PPE requirements, and 5S workplace practices.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent in an appropriate STEM discipline is required.
  • Associate Degree, Diploma, or Technical Certification in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Automobile, Instrumentation, Mechatronics, or a related engineering field is preferred.
  • Regionally applicable technical certifications may be required.
  • This position may require licensing for compliance with export control or regulatory requirements.

Skills

  • Knowledge of laboratory testing, instrumentation, and product validation processes.
  • Experience in test rig setup, fixture assembly, instrumentation installation, and laboratory equipment operation.
  • Understanding of electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
  • Familiarity with data acquisition systems and laboratory measurement equipment.
  • Working knowledge of Calterm and Cummins INSITE diagnostic software is preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of MATLAB for test data analysis and reporting is preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Knowledge of calibration procedures, preventive maintenance, and laboratory quality systems.
  • Experience using general laboratory tools such as digital multimeters, soldering irons, function generators, and measurement instruments.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills for identifying equipment and test system issues.
  • Good documentation, reporting, and record management skills.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills with engineers and cross-functional teams.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, continuous improvement, and 5S workplace standards.

Experience

  • Intermediate level experience in engineering laboratories, product testing, instrumentation, manufacturing, validation, or related technical environments.
  • Experience supporting product testing, laboratory operations, or validation activities is preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with instrumentation installation, calibration, test rig setup, and laboratory equipment maintenance.
  • Exposure to engine, aftertreatment (ATS), or Cummins Engine Systems (CES) testing is desirable.
  • Experience using electronic diagnostic tools, laboratory software, and data acquisition systems is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to execute laboratory tests, maintain accurate technical documentation, and support continuous improvement initiatives.
