Senior Accountant - General Ledger
Who We Are
Lightning AI is the company behind PyTorch Lightning. Founded in 2019, we build an end-to-end platform for developing, training, and deploying AI systems—designed to take ideas from research to production with less friction.
Through our merger with Voltage Park, a neocloud and AI Factory, Lightning AI combines developer-first software with cost-efficient, large-scale compute. Teams get the tools they need for experimentation, training, and production inference, with security, observability, and control built in.
We serve solo researchers, startups, and large enterprises. Lightning AI operates globally with offices in New York City, San Francisco, Seattle, and London, and is backed by Coatue, Index Ventures, Bain Capital Ventures, and Firstminute.
The Way We Work
The people who thrive here are builders who move fast, communicate openly, take ownership, and continuously improve themselves, their teams, and our company. Here's what that looks like in practice:
- Move with Urgency: We move quickly, make thoughtful decisions, and keep momentum. We value action over perfection and learn by shipping.
- Take Ownership: We own outcomes, not just our individual work. We make decisions that move the company forward and follow through.
- Communicate Openly: We communicate directly, seek to understand, and create clarity for others. Honest conversations help us move faster together.
- Build Great Teams: We lead by example, empower others, and create healthy teams where people can do their best work.
- Raise the Bar: We're always improving ourselves. We learn from feedback, consistently challenge ourselves to grow, and focus on the work that matters most.
- Think Long-Term: We design for what's next. We create scalable systems, simplify complexity, and use AI and automation to amplify our impact.
What We're Looking For
We are looking for a Senior Accountant, General Ledger to support the general ledger close across our legal entities, including the balance sheet, the reconciliations behind it, and the reporting package that comes out of it, and to help rebuild how that close runs.
This is the record-to-report seat. Our Accounting Manager, Revenue Operations owns revenue and AR; our Senior Accountant, Accounts Payable & Procure-to-Pay owns the payables cycle. You will support the rest of the balance sheet such as cash reconciliation, intercompany, payroll accrual, prepaids, fixed assets, leases, and the monthly financial statements and flux analysis that tie it all together.
The transformation half of the title is not decoration. You will close the books each month and help redesign the process you just ran, migrating it into NetSuite, replacing manual workarounds with controls, and documenting it so it no longer depends on any one person.
You will be joining the Finance Team and report to the Director of Corporate Accounting. This is a hybrid role based in our San Francisco office with in-office requirements of 2 days per week.
What You'll Do
- Support the general ledger close. Prepare journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules for the balance sheet across entities on a predictable, auditable cadence against a defined close calendar.
- Reconcile cash and treasury. Prepare bank reconciliations across multiple operating, money market, and card-settlement accounts, including third-party payment platforms where the bank feed and the subledger don't map one to one, and clear reconciling items.
- Reconcile intercompany. Prepare monthly intercompany receivable and payable reconciliations between entities, investigate out-of-balance positions, and support the settlement cadence that keeps them from recurring.
- Support payroll and benefits accounting. Prepare payroll journal entries, accrued compensation, bonus and PTO schedules, including the GL mapping between the payroll platform and the ledger.
- Maintain prepaids, fixed assets, and leases. Maintain prepaid schedules and amortization; maintain the fixed asset register including in-service timing, capitalization thresholds, and depreciation for large-scale compute hardware; maintain lease schedules and ASC 842 accounting for data center and facility leases.
- Support the reporting package. Prepare monthly financial statements and balance sheet and income statement flux analysis with written commentary
- Help build the function. Support the NetSuite implementation, document the close process, write desktop procedures, and help establish the reconciliation and review controls that a company at our stage needs and doesn't yet have.
What You'll Need
- 4+ years of progressive accounting experience, including hands-on monthly close work; a mix of public accounting and high-growth industry experience is ideal.
- Demonstrated command of the balance sheet close: cash, intercompany, prepaids, fixed assets, and payroll accounting.
- Experience supporting an external audit as a preparer, including building workpapers that stand on their own.
- Excellent written communication; you can explain a variance in a sentence and document a conclusion in a memo.
- Advanced Excel; comfort working with large transaction datasets.
Preferred
- Active CPA (or CPA candidate), or a strong public-accounting foundation.
- Working knowledge of ASC 842.
- Exposure to ASC 805 purchase accounting or multi-entity consolidation.
- ERP experience, particularly NetSuite implementation or migration; comfort working in QuickBooks during transition.
