Role Responsibilities

This position is responsible for supporting Western Union Japan KK's (WUJKK) regulatory compliance framework and ensuring adherence to applicable regulatory requirements, licensing obligations, and reporting requirements established by the Japan Financial Services Agency (JFSA), Kanto Local Finance Bureau (KFB), Japan Ministry of Finance (JMOF), Japan Financial Intelligence Center (JAFIC), and other relevant regulatory, supervisory, governmental, and quasi-regulatory bodies.
The incumbent is responsible for coordinating regulatory submissions, maintaining regulatory reporting schedules, supporting regulatory examinations and inspections, monitoring regulatory developments, and assisting with compliance risk assessments. The role works closely with Compliance, Legal, Risk, Operations, Finance, and Business teams to ensure timely fulfillment of regulatory obligations and effective implementation of regulatory requirements across WUJKK.
This position reports to the AML Compliance Manager and MLRO for WUJKK.

Regulatory Reporting & Submissions

  • Prepare, coordinate, and track regulatory reports, notifications, periodic returns, and other submissions required by the JFSA, KFB/KLFB, JMOF, and other relevant authorities.
  • Ensure regulatory filings are completed accurately, timely, and in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain regulatory reporting calendars and monitor reporting deadlines.
  • Support the collection, validation, and reconciliation of data used in regulatory reporting.
  • Maintain records of regulatory submissions, correspondence, and supporting documentation.

Regulatory Compliance Monitoring

  • Monitor applicable laws, regulations, regulatory guidance, and supervisory expectations impacting WUJKK.
  • Conduct regulatory impact assessments and support implementation of regulatory changes.
  • Assist in maintaining and updating compliance policies, procedures, and controls to reflect evolving regulatory requirements.
  • Perform compliance reviews and monitoring activities to identify potential regulatory compliance issues.
  • Escalate identified compliance risks and support remediation efforts.

Regulatory Engagement & Examinations

  • Support regulatory inspections, examinations, audits, and supervisory reviews conducted by Japanese regulators.
  • Coordinate requests for information from regulators and assist in preparing responses and supporting documentation.
  • Maintain logs of regulatory inquiries, findings, commitments, and remediation activities.
  • Track progress of corrective actions resulting from regulatory examinations and internal reviews.

Compliance Risk Management

  • Assist in conducting compliance risk assessments and control effectiveness reviews.
  • Support ongoing compliance oversight activities relating to licensing obligations, consumer protection requirements, outsourcing arrangements, and operational compliance matters.
  • Identify potential regulatory risks and recommend appropriate mitigation measures.
  • Prepare compliance reports, dashboards, and management information for internal stakeholders.

AML & Financial Crime Compliance Support

  • Support compliance activities relating to AML/CTF, sanctions, fraud prevention, and financial crime regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in the preparation of regulatory reporting related to AML and financial crime obligations.
  • Support reviews of compliance processes to ensure alignment with Japanese regulatory expectations.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders on regulatory requirements relating to customer due diligence, transaction monitoring, recordkeeping, and suspicious transaction reporting.

Training & Awareness

  • Assist in developing and delivering regulatory compliance awareness materials and training programs.
  • Support business units by providing guidance on regulatory requirements and compliance procedures.
  • Promote a culture of compliance and regulatory awareness across the organization.

Role Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Law, Accounting, Compliance, Risk Management, or a related field preferred.
  • 2–5 years of experience in compliance, regulatory reporting, risk management, audit, legal, financial crime compliance, or financial services operations.
  • Experience within payments, banking, fintech, money services businesses, or other regulated financial institutions preferred.
  • Experience supporting regulatory reporting, regulatory examinations, or regulatory compliance activities is highly desirable.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Intermediate to advance understanding of Japanese financial services regulations and regulatory frameworks.
  • Knowledge of compliance risk management, regulatory reporting, AML/CTF, and financial crime compliance principles.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to interpret regulatory requirements and apply them to operational processes.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Language Requirements

  • Fluent written and spoken English.
  • Strong Japanese language proficiency preferred, particularly for reviewing regulatory communications and interacting with local stakeholders.
