Data Platform Engineering Manager (Maternity Cover)
Application Deadline - 31st July 2026
OVERVIEW OF ROLE;
The Data Platform Engineering Manager leads Data Platform Engineering teams distributed globally, creating the conditions for engineers to do their best work. The role is a people-first leadership position with strong technical leadership accountability: setting direction, removing obstacles, and ensuring the team delivers reliable data centric solutions - data systems, pipelines, data manipulations.
The Manager partners closely with Team Leaders to build a healthy, inclusive, and high-performing culture grounded in trust and psychological safety. They hire, coach, and develop engineers and leaders through regular 1:1s, feedback, and performance reviews, applying servant leadership and demonstrating empathy for day-to-day engineering challenges (delivery pressure, incidents, technical debt, ambiguity) while supporting sustainable pace.
Requirements
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES;
- People Leadership & Team Health – Hire, coach and develop engineers and Team Leaders through regular 1:1s, feedback and performance reviews; foster an inclusive, psychologically safe culture; maintain sustainable pace and team morale; and actively remove blockers so the team can deliver.
- Delivery, Backlog & Stakeholder Alignment – Own and prioritise the backlog and roadmap for data platform services/capabilities; align stakeholders and external teams on outcomes, scope and timelines; manage dependencies, risks and delivery plans; communicate clearly “why” and “what” to the team; and ensure services are production-ready (SLAs/SLOs, release and change practices).
- Continuous Improvement – Drive continuous improvement based on data and feedback; identify and remove sources of toil and delivery friction; and improve data platform experience for external teams through automation, standardisation and self-service capabilities.
- Strategy & Outcomes – Define team goals/OKRs aligned to company and technology strategy; translate strategy into an executable roadmap; balance near-term delivery with data platform sustainability (reliability, security, maintainability, cost)
- Learning & Technical Currency – Stay current with data services, public cloud data services ecosystem and modern data engineering practices; bring relevant ideas into the roadmap; and ensure the team has time and support to learn and apply them pragmatically.
- Technical Leadership & Platform Design – Provide technical leadership on data platform solution design, applying strong data engineering principles and non-functional requirements (scalability, reliability, security, operability). Guide design reviews and technical decisions to ensure data platform services/capabilities address real data pain points and deliver measurable value for external teams.
- Leadership Development – Coach Team Leaders to strengthen people leadership, delivery management and technical decision-making; help them build autonomy, consistency and healthy team practices.
- Documentation & Governance – Ensure clear, accessible documentation for data platform services (standards, how-to guides, runbooks, architecture decisions) that enables self-service for external teams and meets business and compliance requirements.
- Reliability, Incident Response & Operations – Ensure data platform services are observable, resilient and operating within agreed targets; coordinate incident response for outages or security incidents; drive root-cause analysis and follow-up actions; and continuously improve operational practices to prevent recurrence.
