Position Purpose
The General Maintenance Worker supports the educational mission of the college by ensuring that campus facilities are safe, clean, functional, and welcoming for students, staff, and visitors. This position performs daily custodial and light maintenance activities across all buildings and grounds to maintain a healthy and orderly environment. Work is completed under general supervision and follows established schedules and priorities to meet department service standards.
Responsibilities include routine cleaning, basic repair tasks, operation of custodial equipment, support for event setups, seasonal projects, grounds, projects, and special maintenance needs. The position supports a safe, sustainable, and welcoming campus environment by adhering to safety standards, delivering responsive service, and working collaboratively with the Facilities team to ensure dependable building operations that positively serve the campus community.
Position Responsibilities
Perform routine janitorial, custodial, and housekeeping duties throughout assigned areas. Carry out scheduled cleaning and maintenance tasks in classrooms, labs, offices, study areas, lecture spaces, auditoriums, cafeterias, shops, conference rooms, hallways, stairwells, foyers, and entryways to ensure a clean, safe, and orderly campus environment.
Ensure a safe, compliant, and well-maintained campus by following established safety procedures, properly handling cleaning chemicals, and using required personal protective equipment. Maintain accurate labeling and correct dilution of all chemical products, and apply knowledge of safety regulations to protect yourself, coworkers, and the campus community. Secure work areas as needed and support overall building safety and security operations.
Perform other duties as assigned and perform a wide range of Facilities support duties-including task completion, event preparation, basic maintenance, grounds work, equipment operation, emergency response, and assistance to maintenance and custodial staff to ensure smooth departmental operations and maintain clean, safe, and well-functioning campus facilities. Follow instructions and complete assigned tasks within established timelines.
Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $20.87 - $25.88/hour
(DOQ – Salary Placement will be done at time of hire.)
Minimum Qualifications (must have at time of application)
Knowledge of:
Different types of flooring/floor covering sufficient to determine proper methods of maintenance and appropriate cleaning methods, materials, agents and equipment.
Chemical cleaning agents such as ammonia, bleaches, scouring agents and soaps sufficient to appropriately select the agent(s), handle and apply, and dispose of safely.
Methods, tools, and equipment used in maintenance sufficient to use effectively and operate safely and to make minor repairs.
Ability to:
Physical health and endurance sufficient to perform work functions.
Follow simple oral and written instructions.
Perform assigned tasks with limited work direction.
Keep simple records.
Must possess a valid driver's license.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to perform a variety of physical tasks, lift and carry materials weighing 40-60 lbs.(and occasionally more), and work in inclement weather conditions when necessary.
Preferred Qualification
Human relations skills are sufficient to work cooperatively and efficiently with coworkers, college staff, students, and the public.
Demonstrate knowledge of, and interest in, or experience with diverse cultures and populations.
Previous maintenance/cleaning experience.
